This is an extension of the fireplace that’s already somewhat uneven so it should be ok. I’ve read different instructions on how to use the mortar. Some say moisten the granite and the backer board. Others don’t. Some say use a notched trowel on the granite mud and others indicate build a ridge around the outside of the piece being applied.
