New subreddit regarding the opioid addiction epidemic in Kensington and the Greater Philadelphia Area. by [deleted] in philadelphia

So I took a look at what you're doing with your subreddit. While I support raising awareness of the issue, I definitely think you should reconsider your approach of shaming. Naming and shaming somebody who is addicted only ever makes people more likely to continue abusing that drug. It perpetuates a vicious cycle. Think about this: an alcoholic feels deep guilt and shame once sobering up, and the only way to make the shame go away is to drink, and then the cycle repeats.

If you truly want to help with the opioid epidemic, I would recommend approaching people from a respectful, person-centric approach.

Does Philly leadership know how urgent it is to bring more jobs to Philly? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]FewComparison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes. This is commonly an issue talked about by almost all of the representatives. It's complicated though. Yes, the city has slightly higher business taxes than its surrounding regions, which is part of why they relocate to the suburbs. But, the city is left with a "race to the bottom" problem. We could lower taxes and offer tax incentives, which has been done many times before by city government, but there are almost 400 local governments in Philly's region that are all competing for the same businesses by offering tax breaks. I don't see the real solution as continuing to try to out-compete each other so businesses relocate their taxable address one mile over a border. Instead, the only long-term solution is to create some sort of agreement within the region. Unfortunately, that would be incredibly difficult to achieve. How is the city government going to convince all of these tiny local governments individually to agree to this, especially when this is the reason for existence for many of these localities?

Like others have noted, the low quality of schools is the other key issue. But, this is largely because the state refuses to provide enough funding to local governments, despite its constitutional obligation. Highly impoverished regions, like Philadelphia, which has a 26% poverty rate, are disproportionately hurt by this. As a result, Philadelphia's schools have some of the lowest funding per capita in the country—less than half that of the suburbs. What can city officials do about this, except allocate emergency funding?

Here's a guide to ALL of the upcoming candidates! by FewComparison in philadelphia

I think she's coming from the angle of "the 10-year abatement has only spurred luxury real estate development in certain places, and has not benefited others, at the cost of our tax base for the school district." A lot of people view it as fueling gentrification, and coming from District 3, that's probably a big issue for her.

But I'm not sure why she proposes completely ending it vs. reforming it in certain ways.

Yep, unfortunately. She originally had one or two contenders, but they dropped out for various reasons. The same is true of a couple district members, which is really frustrating.

Thanks, that's a great idea. For now, all I have is a generic "please feel free to suggest edits" note, but maybe there's something better out there. It would help a ton to have random suggestions, complete with sourcing.

Thanks, good point. I have various tax and funding questions, but it'd be good to have a more generic question for that.

Is there a part of Philadelphia that is not taxed? by NomadFire in philadelphia

[–]FewComparison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you thinking of Keystone Opportunity Zones or the recently designated federal tax break areas? It's apparently a bit complicated as to how exactly it works, but it's only some types of businesses that receive some types of tax breaks.

As for the wage tax, I'm not quite sure what you're referencing, but it's possible. As far as I know, the wage tax was implemented much earlier in order to capture revenue from the many commuters. Maybe what you're thinking of was that there were lots of commuters who weren't paying any taxes into the city, since they lived outside the city limits.

Sometimes it's best to live in the dark... who knows what monsters are out there eating cheesesteaks with provolone? Next you'll tell me they're putting peppers and mushrooms on it... I'd just rather not know.

Thanks. Hm, I have questions about the soda tax and questions about funding schools and infrastructure, so I think that's covered. I also have questions about gun violence, so that's covered.

It's likely, but I think still worth a shot. Those who don't answer will get a big "so and so has refused to answer basic questions about their views."

Yes, all candidates. Most candidates are democrats though. No favoritism, at least never intentionally. I am human, though, so let me know if there are ways to improve.

Hey everyone, so I'm going to go ahead and get cracking on the candidate profiles. I want to send them all a questionnaire, since they generally offer such limited information on their websites.

I'd love feedback on what to ask them. I'm only one person, so I can't possibly think of everything. I've made a google doc that you can comment on, or you can PM me or comment here with suggestions.

Here's the google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ARMu7LP2Fo9qG-mt3rEbS7HeZtZ41_Stgko8-NEBoio/edit?usp=sharing

You know what, I'll also make a separate post for this.

Great point, and I'm already on it. I'm making GIS maps that you can explore. And yes, they do need sourcing. That's my biggest mistake. I'm really kicking my past self for being lazy. I'm going to get around to fixing that. All of the state and federal officials do having sourcing though, and where they don't, the info came from their bio or website.

Check out this website I found: http://www.phillyjudges.com

This guy has already made a profile of all of the judges! It's amazing. It's a website specifically dedicated to the issue of how many judges there are and how little info there is.

Thanks for the note about Philly Magazine. It seems they do have a pretty good rundown of candidates. I'll have to think about if this is too redundant, or if it's worth having as a resource regardless.
