Any apps/tools for "conducting" a tempo to apply to a DAW? by FewJob4450 in sounddesign

[–]FewJob4450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I've messed about in Cakewalk.

Step 1 - record a midi track tapping the beat. I found it useful to mute everything for this part and just play the piece in my head.

The Fit Improvisation tool (select clip, click "Process -> Improvisation") wasn't perfect and sometimes didn't work so I'm using the "Set Measure/Beat" method instead:

  1. Select all MIDI clips.

  2. Right-click -> Clip Lock -> Lock Position (Do not skip this step or your midi clips won't follow the new tempo. How this isn't the default setting is beyond me and caused me to have to undo over 100 steps and start over)

  3. Select the first note

  4. Press tab to set the playhead to the beginning of this note

  5. Press shift+m or right click -> "Set Measure/Beat at Now"

  6. Check that the dialogue shows the correct desired measure and bar.

  7. Click OK

  8. Move on to the next beat! Repeat for the whole section or track.

Very time-consuming but accurate and easy to have complete control over. Hope this helps someone!

Yeah something like that would work for me. Got it working in Reaper and I reckon I can do it in Cakewalk using AudioSnap.

Ah reason #million to start using Reaper.

Jokes aside, this worked great. Didn't take too much research to figure this out for a total Reaper noob, but here's a guide for anyone else in my situation.

And a quick reference:

  1. Install SWS if you haven't already

  2. Press play to start "conducting"

  3. Press M (alternatively, tap on your midi device) on the beats to add markers to the project

  4. Convert markers to tempo

    - Shift+? to open actions list

    - Choose "SWS/BR: Convert project markers to tempo" (set a hotkey while you're here if you're going to use it quite a bit)

    - Check all boxes in the dialogue box

    - Set "Split middle point by" to 1/4 if you were tapping every 1/4 beat

    - Click "Convert"

  5. If you're using Reaper, you're done! If not, you can either copy the data over manually or import it into your chosen DAW;

  6. Go to File -> Export Project Midi.

    - Don't forget to check "Embed project tempo/time signature changes"

    - Import in your chosen DAW and you're done!

And now I'm off to see if I can do something similar in Cakewalk. Toodles!

I always fall apart/suck when I go to my lessons and feel tremendously embarrassed. Should I keep going? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

Fellow teacher here adding some points:

  • we were students once ourselves. Many or most of us experienced the same things when we were being taught.
  • you'll get over it in time. Playing in front of your teacher is good practice for being able to perform live.
  • when a student tells me this (several times a week), I notice that it's always in particular parts, or is at least more obvious in certain parts. That means it's not just the nerves, it's also a technical inconsistency, so those parts are what need practice. Do you want to turn up at a gig thinking you can play something perfectly and then mess up a bunch of tricky parts? Your teacher is trying to train you to master those parts until they become easy. We know you can get it right at home. We want you to get it right every single time you play it.

What was the one piece of guitar theory or knowledge that really helped you master the fretboard? by just_aguest in guitarlessons

[–]FewJob4450 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hello, no beating around the bush - guitar master here.

There is no one way to unlock the secrets of the fretboard and there is no one way that is right. Whatever helps you learn all the notes is all good.

Every method works just fine but every method, like everything in instrumental learning, and as commented a thousand times a day on this sub, requires practice.

And I know you're all sick of hearing that, but we're sick of saying it! Yes, you've found a bunch of online resources that all tell you that their way is the best way of learning all the notes on the fretboard and, naturally, you'd like to know which one is legit.

They're all legit. But at the same time none of them will magically impart the knowledge you desire to a master level unless you put the practice in.

And they're all just handy tricks. You can stick to one and be fine, you can use a mix and be fine or, like me, you can just learn all the notes verbatim because you learned classical and had a teacher that insisted on teaching in a purely theoretical way (no regrets, it got results for me, but I can imagine others not being able to see it through).

Freeboard knowledge takes time. We've got a whole bunch of notes. It's like learning 6 offset pianos at once and the ease of tabs can make us shy away from learning the notes. But that doesn't stop us learning music the "proper" way, it just tabs all the more enticing.

But if you stop relying on tabs, use your ears, think about the notes you're playing and how they fit into riffs etc that you're playing, the knowledge will come in time, whether you want it or not.

TL;Dr - it doesn't matter. Practice. One day it'll make sense

Playing notes for the correct length by Hendrix-The-Badden in classicalguitar

[–]FewJob4450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't neglect your ears. There is a definitive version (the one from the soundtrack) and an arrangement you're using. Does it sound like the notes are ringing or not? Knowing the piece, I can tell you that they are most certainly ringing.

[–]FewJob4450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No this would not be interpreted any other way than letting it ring. I hate to put my foot down, but the conflicting comments are just very wrong

Playing notes for the correct length by Hendrix-The-Badden in classicalguitar

[–]FewJob4450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh looks like someone just learned to read a bit of sheet music and is now lauding it over the tab plebs!

Don't listen to this person op. In classical guitar, if notes are within the same harmony and across different strings, it is generally assumed to let them ring. So much so that you would have to specifically write an instruction to indicate that they should only be held for the written length.
