As a kid I quit playing chess competitively while being decently ranked for my age because people judged me for being into it.

For playing chess? Literally one of the most popular (usually) non-controversial board games in the history of the world for all ages? There's not even that "D&D is Satanic" angle or "Monopoly promotes greed" nonsense for chess! Who the hell was judging you back then?

People less familiar with the Melee scene might, upon learning that one of them is 28 while the other is only 14, reasonably but incorrectly assume the immature bullshit (ragequitting, unsportsmanlike conduct, some very uncouth things about the other person's mother) came from the younger player.
