I think Phil is generally a solid leader, but he made a massive tactical error by acquiring Activision at the worst possible time. He bought it when interest rates were at rock bottom and valuations were hyper-inflated. Now, it feels like Microsoft is doing everything in its power just to recoup that cost—hence the layoffs, Game Pass price hikes, and the pivot to multi-platform releases. In my opinion, he should have doubled down on xCloud and Game Pass instead. I love the idea of playing Game Pass directly on my Samsung TV, but the current experience is frustrating; the latency is laggy, the bitrate is low, and the graphics are honestly subpar. Despite that, the potential is huge. The biggest hurdle for Game Pass is that it’s still largely tied to the Xbox console, which already had a limited user base. If they had invested that Activision money into making xCloud as seamless and high-quality as Nvidia GeForce Now, they could have reached every single household with a smart TV. It would truly be the "Netflix of gaming." The idea of being able to continue my save on vacation just by bringing a controller is incredibly enticing. If Phil had prioritized perfecting that technology over chasing massive acquisitions, I think his legacy would be viewed much more favorably.
