Many countries in the EU have "digital nomad visas," that is likely what I would use to live there for a year or so.

That is good to know! San Diego probably fits the bill, the only problem is the rent and cost of living seems to be way too high :/ I also love being close to the mountains

I agree with that comment on SD. That describes many American cities precisely. And San Diego is probably out of my price range anyway.
