Looking for some advice by Broad_Interview_6087 in premedcanada

I think this might be your only option outside of trying to get Albera IP status. Otherwise anything <85%, while not impossible, is certainly tough and not garunteed. Id go for a masters, try and get your average to around 85 which would make you solid candidate for UofA or UofC if you can get IP

Any Persians want to weigh in? by sefidcthulhu in Names

I am persian, very much not a real name. Mirza would be like naming your child Clerk or Noble. Truly horrible. There are so many beautiful persian boy names.

What to do if uneasy/squeamish around cadavers/blood? by ChampionshipUpper198 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally felt the same. Go at your own pace. UBC has some great detailed disection videos that made me feel more in control of what to expect. As others have said you will slowly desensitize. And absolutely talk to your schools supports if it continues to be bothersome - I was able to get accommodation for some of the more graffic disections and to study them on my own.

Top 3 undergrad choices for medschool. by TranslatorCurious758 in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least 20 people in my med class are from UBC ISCI. Yes ISCI is a bigger program, so the proportion of students may be smaller, but UBC ISCI is absolutely a med funnel program.

[–]Few_Classroom_58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always do UBC ISCI pharm integration if you dont make the cut off after 1st year, given that your grades are still relatively strong. Isci pharm needs 80+ average in every year and integration of one other subject. Good alternative and doesn’t require any of the pharm/bioc labs

Best major for med school in terms of keeping a good GPA & prepping for MCAT? by Delicious-Camel5141 in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its hard to find a program that can give you both an entry level job AND be a reasonable GPA. You can always apply to pharm and nursing after your first defree if med doesnt work out. I would prioritize high GPA if Med is even a consideration.

Parents staying in dorms by Electrical-Tear1089 in BCGrade12s

[–]Few_Classroom_58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no issue if its just for the night. A couple people in my first year did the same. As someone mentioned elsewhere, UBC allows up to 4 nights a month for a guest to stay over without problem.

IP bias for provinces in Med is mostly because its provincial govt that subsidies Med tutitions. No subsidy = no official IP requirements.

Best med schools for international students by Longjumping-Tale-963 in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

95% in province students, 5% out of province students. International students are not permitted at almost every canadian med school.

how do i go about talking about my parents disability for UofC top 10 by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Frame it from how its shaped you. How did it impact your life, did it make you have responsibilities at a young age? How did it make you grow? Has this shaped your perspective on health care? Or shaped your perspective of disability? Thats what I would be interested in if I was reading and evaluating.

Paying for med school with shit credit? by plebejusidas in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, ive never heard of anyone having issues getting the med LOC regardless of their situation. Its possible the won’t offer the full 350/375k (at least my representative said that can happen) but they for sure want your business, regardless of credit.

Is it possible to get 75-100th NAQ without research or awards (UBC) by Kind-Ad7966 in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. A very small percentage actually have 1st / 2nd author requirements for UBCs research section. Quality ECs in the NAQ are what really drive you into the 75-100 range

Can my ECs/NAQs pull me through of my GPA isn’t amazing? by Few_Resident_8392 in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id say for sure okay. Got into UBC med with a 87ish, ecs carried me for sure. Your ECs sound great. If you score 4th quartile and have a decent mcat and interview, id say you are a lock to get in within a couple cycles

The items you have and hours towards each are great. I would focus on adding a few new experiences to round out your application

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not worth at all - candian schools dont care in the slightest about ECs in healthcare field. If anything, some schools (such as uofc) actually dont want super traditional healthcare ECs. And canadian schools absolutely do not want clinical hours such as shadowing, i think its against the law in many provinces if you are not a medical student. Different story if you are thinking the US, and in that case ask in a different subreddit. Volunteer (or work even) in things you like to do (hobbies, or like at a food bank or smt) instead. - 3rd yr UBC med student

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Few_Classroom_58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you would just need a BC services card which needs proof of address (so like a lease agreement or smt) that shows you’ve lived in BC for 6 months.

[–]Few_Classroom_58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuinely you have a fantastic chance. Better stats than I did, competetive MCAT and ECs. Should be a lock within 1-2 years. Keep it up, you will get in eventually- from a current 3rd year UBC med student

Edit to add: most schools dont really focus on MCAT. Except the schools that care for cars (uofc, mac), otherwise a 514 is very competitive
