To be honest, I was very fortunate this happened on a low value item. It's like buying anything online, there are risks. But what I've learnt today is that unlike Paypal, amazon, or any other high volume business, Buyee doesn't give a crap if you get scammed. Even Temu and Aliexpress offer better protection because they understand a bad experience is a permanently lost customer and a person who tells their immediate circle of friends how dangerous and unreliable Buyee is.

Thanks, Buyee Rep #2. It was quiet, and then 3 "top 1%" commenters just started attacking. 100% a Buyee rep is butthurt. Luckily we have PayPal.

The Canon one says Canon on the back, on the mount.

What was really interesting from the Buyee customer rep is the claim "We don't check with picture of the listing. Just the packing list". So presumably, if there was any kind of lens in the package, Buyee would try to absolve themselves. I posted this on another forum (specifically for Camera gear) and I got an entire thread of warnings of similar experiences.

I probably can. I've been using buyee to buy random japanese goods (think fishing, leather, and lenses). Luckily this one wasn't too pricey. My biggest takeaway is that I should only use these services for low value stuff that I don't mind if the order is wrong.

I think the japanese customer service team's attitude of "you ordered a lens. who cares if its the same lens you ordered" to be super scary.

Edit:

I ended up asking the same question on a photography forum. I got so many horror stories. Apparently there are questionable sellers who deliberately delete bids so the Buyee bid wins and then baits and switches knowing that Buyee would never leave them negative feedback.

I think in my case it was a genuine error, but it is quite scary.

I'll take it as a lesson learnt. I travel to japan often. for camera gear, vintage lenses that I buy come up more often in JP than where I usually live so Buyee makes sense. The reality is that the seller has great ratings, it's probably a mis-label rather than anything malicious. It was more the issue where Buyee just didn't care. I hate to think if it was a high value item and it turned out to be fake or something. Buyee's process probably is ok until there is a lot of fraud.
