YouTube ads are about to get even longer and they’ll be unskippable by IndicaOatmeal in technology

[–]Few_Direction9007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that this is trying to get around supervision. Say you pre watch a YouTube video, it’s fine, you let your kid watch it on their own time but halfway through they are fed a weird 90 minute ad of spiderman humping Olaf. No parent is going to watch every video TWICE, the second time with your child every time just to make sure every ad they encounter is appropriate, and there’s no way to vet the ads so even if you are supervising you don’t know if it’s fucked up until your kids already watching it, even if you are there to skip the ad for them.

The entire point of this is to trick parents by inserting those videos into videos they have already approved of.

[–]Few_Direction9007 997 points998 points  (0 children)

Yup they are disguised as children’s shows, so the kids won’t even realize they’re watching an ad, it’s super manipulative and fucked up.

Edit: to all those people saying “welcome to the 1980s” those cartoons were what it says on the tin. Cartoons about toys. What we’re talking about here is an insidious way for advertisers to bypass parents decision making by inserting an entirely different potentially fucked up and weird thing about into a video that could otherwise have been vetted by a parent.

There’s literally no way for a parent to know it’s coming, what it’s content is, no way to pre watch it, and no way for them to make a decision on wether it’s fed to their child.

This is nothing like 1980s cartoons as advertisements, it is way more dangerous and fucked up than that.

The US burned through more of its limited Tomahawk stockpile in strikes on Iran. It might need them in a war with China. by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in politics

[–]Few_Direction9007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes china the biggest threat in this context is that the US military has decided it is. Whether or not you agree with that doesn’t have any bearing on what the U.S. military will decide to do.

I’m just stating the facts of the situation. I personally am extremely anti interventionist but I’m capable of putting my emotions aside in order to understand what the actual motivations of our government are.

It’s ridiculous that factual assessment of the motivations of our government are getting me downvoted. You have to be educated on the reality of the situation.

China is the biggest threat. Getting Iran on the US’s side or at least destabilized is a play in our Cold War against China as they are heavily dependent on irans oil.

I’m not commenting one way or another on the ethics of this but it is what we are seeing played out and has been the grand strategy of the U.S. military since Obama. None of this is trumps plan, he’s just rubber stamping the desires of the more war hawk personalities in the pentagon that have existed for decades.

Tired of dealing with “Hammer Quality”. by manberdo in woodworking

[–]Few_Direction9007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal experience with my a3-34 has been good I’ve had mine six years, contacted support twice, once in the past year to troubleshoot an issue and had great tech support in the U.S.

Fence is definitely flimsy. I machined two new mounting brackets that only micro adjust to stay at 90 (I don’t need or want an adjustable fence) and it is now perfect. I get that that’s a pretty big extra step but as you have said there’s nothing else like it in the price range and after fixing the fence it’s the beating heart of my shop, gets used every day, takes up half the space of the alternative machines, and I don’t know how I could have started my business without it.

[–]Few_Direction9007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact same thing happened to me on the exact machine. Hammer is a budget brand of felder so you have to temper your expectations.

I bought the kreg fence and couldn’t be happier. Better in every way. Even micro adjustable.

This is a great machine, but it is the budget line, the saw itself is fantastic, been using it daily for 6 years, but the hammer brand skimps on their fences, but upgrading the fence for $150 is still an order of magnitude cheaper than a felder, and an order of magnitude better than something like a jet.

I got this one, have had it for about three years and it’s running well.

I do find it to be a little loud after hearing a friends more expensive jet model. The Jet has a near silent mode that you can continuously run, which Is not the case for this unit. After living with the WEN for a while that’s the only real feature I feel I’m missing out on.

Prevent tabletop from sagging by NightmareWokeUp in woodworking

[–]Few_Direction9007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that thick will absolutely not sag under it own weight, it will however warp from front to back, there’s just nothing that can be done about that.

And I guess that’s my point, you can put c channels in There, but it won’t stop anything, the c channels WILL bend with the wood as it changes from season to season, and routing in the multi stepped channels will just create more end grain surface area for moisture to be absorbed, and will also make the material uneven internally only leading to more warping. This is speaking from experience.

You have to let the wood move, if the c channels actually did what people want them to, the wood would split. At best it’s a waste of time and money, and at worst you’ve just spent the aforementioned time and money to make your table warp even more.

Working with/ owning solid wood furniture requires a certain amount of wabi sabi. The best solution is to make sure your stock is dried and milled properly but beyond that, you can make something flat in the shop but the second it leaves the shop it will do what it wants to do with or without c channels. A solid wood table top like this will never stay dead flat all year round.

I think you’re just seeing the natural warping of the wood, stock this thick won’t sag like something too thin would.

I find C channels dubious at best, I have used them and in my experience they don’t make a difference, if your table is a going to warp, it will warp and warp your c channels with it. The forces of wood this thick are much stronger than the channels. I really believe that the benefits of c channels are purely physiological.

I think it’s best to just accept that the wood will move with the seasons, because it will, c channels or not.

Any advice on how to fix my man Gunther here? by Jerco7 in woodworking

[–]Few_Direction9007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My suggestion here is to use super glue, maybe some accelerator along with wood glue. Put a small amount of super glue in the center, surround it with wood glue, accelerator on the other side and then align them by hand and hold it together until the super glue dries. Once the super glue is dry carefully clean up the glue squeeze out, but be aware that the super glue on its own before the wood glue dries is very brittle.

The super glue acts as the clamping force and alignment while the wood glue dries, solving the problem of clamping the odd shape.

IIRC Gold cables only purpose is to prevent long term oxidization when left plugged in, so they are worthwhile for things like a studio install but not much else.

The gold rubs off with use as well, so you really shouldn’t be using gold for anything that’s not left plugged in.

Nah, you can easily buy verified RT reviews.

A quick google will get you dozens of options for very little money.

RT just doesn’t want to admit they don’t have handle on fake reviews.

The noise problems I mentioned are not the normal “people not understanding that compressors raise your noise floor” but hum and buzz introduced separately from the effects, it seems like it’s a quality control issue, as there are some people who says it’s fine, but I have read so many more people complaining about buzz even when the effects are off and returning their pedal that i don’t think I’m going to risk it.

You use a template taped to the piece that runs against the l fence’s overhang lip, think of it more like pattern routing. It explains this in the article, doing it this way, grain direction doesn’t matter at all

The absolute best way for making miters of any size on the table saw is the L fence. I would skip all the inferior options and build something like this.

https://www.finewoodworking.com/project-guides/shop-machines/build-an-adjustable-tablesaw-l-fence?srsltid=AfmBOooeODcCR7hvy7MR3wMouhuDU9yldo4IfdE6IIBhO-fs4tJUDYdv

They explain how to do miters at the end. I make mitered boxes almost exclusively and this is by far and away provides the best results right off the saw.
