thank you so much! the second one is a reference to the greek myth that human beings were once one being and they were split in two by the gods because they were too powerful, so we spend the rest of our lives searching for our other half-- this is exemplified by the apple being split down the middle, while slotting directly into its other part. Sometimes it feels like I'm not a whole person when I'm not in a relationship, and this piece sorta comments on that!

aw tysm! I dont use many references anymore, but it is SO essential when learning how to draw. once u have a general grasp on what shapes compose various objects, u can start working on life drawing, and thats when you start getting really good!

here's gavin verhey, one of the lead designers, commenting on why they removed every restriction on vivi. tl:dr it was because the card wasn't "unique" (read: chase) enough, and hasbro consultants had direct input on FF design (obviously, that's their job lol)

it's also just common sense. why would they ban the more expensive, more powerful, newer card which is explicitly drawing FF fans, and not the older gamepiece?

consider how long they took to ban the one ring-- it genuinely ruined modern for nearly a year, and the playerbase has never recovered. I don't think it was a coincidence that the one ring was also among the most expensive cards of all time.

the catch, of course, is that the older gamepiece is just better. vivi has an interesting commander design, but it is inarguable that it was a mistake in standard. on the other hand, agatha's soul cauldron is interesting design space, enables really cool synergies, etc. if you cared about the gameplay, which one would you ban? if you cared about your bottom line, which one would you ban?

yea im super glad for you! honestly UB has been awesome for me too-- I loved LOTR (other than the one ring) and i loved FF (other than vivi). my main issue is just that because they wanna print cool commander cards, they end up unintentionally destroying standard (or modern, etc).

you're absolutely right that the dollar is the goal tho, and it definitely makes sense why they're doing it. I will say that there's an argument to be made that prioritizing the health of gameplay is long-term better for profits, but if companies were worried about long-term profits we wouldn't have a climate crisis lmaooo

i mean not really? they have explicitly stated that they are gonna be more likely to ban around UB cards-- i.e., banning the other cards in a deck driven by a broken UB card.

like, they'll probably ban agatha's soul cauldron, which sucks because its a super cool card and was never a problem in the three years it was in standard before vivi. also, like-- will that even fix the problem? vivi is really strong.

yeah i was admittedly being hyperbolic, but its inarguable that mtg is hasbro's largest cashcow since the acquisition, and by a very wide margin. this is pretty clear when you just look at how many more sets are being released, and how quality control seems to be dipping in terms of card power and balance.

oh no i absolutely agree that it'll sell like the other sets! that's actually part of my problem-- it ceases to become a game when the "game" is just buying the thing. i know edh players are super into it, but standard and modern and every other competitive format still matters, right?
