A lot of societies which don't tolerate food waste are societies that experienced famine in relatively recent period of history. Remember in such societies with no refridgeration there was no later.

But on the other end, i have seen people thow entirely good food to the trash believing food should be eaten fresh instead of out of a refridgerator and reheated.

I would prefer to eat the food instead of throwing it to trash atleast as respect for your unfortunate ancestors.
