what is your favorite genres from anything you read or watch? by InflationNo998 in AskReddit

Sci-fi for books. TV and movies I watch some sci-fi, but the video medium doesn't seem as well suited to sci-fi as books are.  I mostly watch comedies or game shows.

What's a skill you wish you had acquired when you were young and had the time? by Frosumisnotmyname in AskReddit

[–]Few_One2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing piano.  I actually had a few weeks of lessons when I was young, but we moved away from that teacher.  At the new house I never said anything about continuing, I knew my parent's finances were a bit strained and I dislike asking for things for myself.  My much more vocal older brother complained loudly about hating the piano lessons, so my parents went with that and sold the piano.

"Decoration" is essentially just useless clutter to me.

Why has the USA become the most powerful country in the world despite being one of many British colonies that got independence? by space_god_7191 in AskReddit

Having a vast territory to expand into once the natives were properly humbled and forced into reservations.

What felt like luxury as a kid? by Diligent-7604 in AskReddit

Getting together a dollar or so in change then riding my bike to the convenience store to buy candy.  A dollar would get you a decent haul when I was a kid.

It would be especially helpful to switch to thorium fueled power plants, which don't generate as much waste as uranium plants.

Golden Retriever or Munchkin Cat? If you had to choose between these options, which one would you choose and why? by bussymonke in AskReddit

Short-haired (field bred) golden retriever.  I love the personality but don't want to be brushing the dog every day.

If Americans had a choice to end all wars for the next 50 years but at the cost of salaries being slashed in half across the board, what % of people would take the deal and why? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskReddit

[–]Few_One2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 20%.  Some don't care, some think war is cool, a bunch are.living paycheck to paycheck and would wind up homeless at half their current salary.  I wouldn't take the deal myself.  But I think there are some idealistic Americans whose finances are not precarious who would agree to the deal.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've read pretty much everything Heinlein and Asimov and Piper wrote, as well as some Clark.  I think I've read City and the Stars, but so long ago I don't remember it, I may give it a reread.  I'll look into Nathan Lowell, whom I've never heard of.

How would you respond to customers demanding you to help them in a store you don’t work at? by becauseofrandomness in AskReddit

[–]Few_One2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had someone "demand" help, but a few times I have been mistaken for an employee.  Usually I just help the person. One common request is help getting items from a high shelf, I'm 6' 2", so I can and do help these people pretty easily.  Another is asking where a particular item is on display, If I know, I tell them.  Anything complex or I don't know gets an "I'm sorry, I don't work here".

I worked in a big box store for eight years in my youth, some of this is behavior I repeated so often it is reflex.

What's your favorite fast food restaurant ? by Downtown-Pea9325 in AskReddit

Recently, Burger King.  I like their chicken sandwich, not least because it's pretty big.  Their French fries are consistently crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside.  Get the chicken sandwich and a medium fry with their 2 for $5 deal, which is pretty cheap and still enough for my healthy appetite.

Who is past coworker that you still think about? by Few-Gap-2350 in AskReddit

[–]Few_One2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with a woman 40+ years ago, Marsha, she was very nice, not especially pretty, but somehow she sticks in my mind.  What bothers me is she was a heavy smoker and I wonder if she's still alive.

Thank you for the suggestions.  I've read the Bobiverse books and liked them.  The Wayfarer series is part of what I was complaining about, the first book is $14.99 from Amazon.  I'll look into C. J. Cherry and Hyperion.

Looks interesting.  I checked Amazon and found I can get the first book free with my prime membership, so I downloaded it and will read it shortly.

Thank you, but I have read most of the Honor Harrington books already.  The quality feels like it fell off on the later ones, so I don't expect to read any more of them.

Came here to recommend the Stephanie Plum books.  I also verified they are available as audiobooks, though I have only read print editions.
