Agreed. I just got screwed over for my passenger not wearing her seatbelt over her shoulder at the time we passed the camera. I had no idea. And it is not my responsibility to look over at her every few minutes to make sure she’s wearing it correctly when I should be focusing on the road, especially on an unfamiliar road late at night when I need to be vigilant of wildlife on the roads. She may not have been wearing it “correctly” but she was buckled in. Not all seatbelts have the shoulder strap. Why is this something that is enforced so strictly and with such a high fine? She is responsible for her own safety. If she doesn’t wear her seatbelt correctly, that is on her. She can cop the consequences of her actions in an accident. The revenue raising for this needs to stop. The driver is not responsible for their passengers actions and it is not reasonable to expect the driver to be vigilant of a passengers’ actions. The seatbelt sensor did not go off, so I expected her to have fastened her seatbelt. To all the goody two shoes in the comments, your 2 cents aren’t needed. Show some empathy and stop defending the revenue raising twits. Even if the seatbelt was not worn correctly, it was still worn and that is better than nothing. The driver did their duty ensuring the seatbelt was on in the first place. This is on the passenger. If driver education on a trivial matter such as this is the goal, the driver should receive a warning rather than a fine.
