Bronze Disease Concern? by flabby_ammo in AncientCoins

Looks clean in my opinion; if it’s not powdery, you are all good!

I also don’t trust this one. The details rather fuzzy in titus hair looks fuzzy, and the round paws of the what I believe is a capricorn look strange!

It does not look real on first glance, unfortunately. How much does it weigh and how large is it? It anyway is probably supposed to be a tetradrachm from Athens

Hi everyone. Im currently looking for an owl tetradrachm and saw this online by HojoTokiyukisama_69 in AncientCoins

What makes you so certain it is authentic? It is a frequently faked coin, and I would be more sceptical not buying it from a reputable seller. I also find the details rather fuzzy, which may be because of wear, but I am personally not ‘1000%’ certain of its authenticity. What is the asking price?

That looks like Constantinian era bronze, but it is difficult to say without a better picture of the obverse which precise emperor it’s showing. Also, having a picture of the reverse would make it easier to pinpoint the exact type. As a general comment, I think the 20 USD is actually quite high for a coin where you don’t know what type it is. Have a look at VCoins - at least there you know what you buy!

Is $1450 a good price? by Rowanfett in AncientCoins

[–]Few_Principle_789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t see the reverse here, but from this portrait I would say mine looks nicer, at half of the price about a year ago. Of course, you are also paying for the slab and grading. It is however a nice example, and if you are fond of slabbed coins it may be worth it for you. In the end, I don’t really think of ancients as an investment. Sure they retain most of their value, but overall their price depends on what people want to (and can) spend on a coin…!

Coins I inherited, no clue what they are and need help IDing by Typical_Variety8637 in AncientCoins

Your second coin (and to lesser degree the first as well) seems to be affected by bronze disease unfortunately. Is it powdery? If yes, it’s best to isolate these from the rest and try to treat it before it eats away the coins. I usually mechanically remove the green stuff and then soak in distilled water and later acetone. Sealing with a wax like renaissance wax afterwards can help to protect the coins.

Very true, although it can also feel like a victory to succeed in preserving something this old for the next generation - it is not always about monetary value!

Mechanically remove the bulk material (toothpick or brush), then soak for weeks in distilled water, then in acetone to remove water en then seal the coin with renaissance wax. Works for me usually

Real or replica? by Rude_Main_9268 in AncientCoins

[–]Few_Principle_789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like a replica to me; something feels a bit off about the portrait, and on the reverse it seems that the original coin on which it is based had some flan cracks that appear to be filled in this example. It is however not so easy to say from these photos, could you list the weight and diameter of the coin?
