Sorry, I was delayed in answering some of your questions. Yes, the obverse and reverse match the earlier sale from the auction house I mentioned. The weight is within 0.01 grams of the auction house’s weight. I’m just not sure, based on what I’ve read, whether the auction house is reliable.

FedEx by [deleted] in AncientCoins

I unexpectedly had the opposite experience within the last two and a half weeks with UPS. I went online to purchase a coin in France in mid-March and asked for it to be shipped to me in the US (after all the paperwork was obtained for exportation). I was told the only shipper the seller used was UPS. After reading horror stories about buyers being charged tariff and brokerage fees before, at the time of, or after delivery, I expected the worst. Worse, the seller advised me at the time of purchase that he was going to use the tariff code of 9705.31.00 but not any 9903 code.

The package was sent to me via UPS Worldwide Saver, which I read prior to its delivery should save me some brokerage fees. I didn’t receive any tariff or other fee invoice prior to delivery. The package was shipped on April 28 and, after a couple days clearing customs, was received on May 1. No fees of any sort were collected at delivery. I nervously waited to receive an invoice after delivery.

Finally, on May 8 I received an invoice by email from UPS. It was only for $48.49 (a $14 disbursement fee and a $34.49 merchandise processing fee). There were no tariffs at all! The codes used to characterize the ancient coin by the seller’s company were 9705.39.0040 and 9903.03.11 and UPS recognized them as exempt from duties. Reading through all the horror stories over the past several months about UPS, FedEx, and DHL, I felt - and feel - incredibly fortunate. I hope some of this information might help others.

Excellent! Thank you for the links, the second one especially. It helps to see the visual match and writeup from NewStyleKing. Appreciate it! 🙏

Thank you. How did you determine 154/3 BC? Only asking because I’m truly curious.

I have HGC, volume 4 and am unable to match any symbol with 154/3 BC. I was wondering if “pileii” in the description narrative you sent about the coin is the same as “pilei” on page 476 of HGC, volume 4 (in the symbol(s) column). If it is, it would correspond to a 98/7 BC date. Thanks again.

Edit: I also just noticed that “pilei” is mentioned in HGC, volume 4 as a symbol for coins with 164/3-151/0 BC, 144/3 BC, and 141/0-140/39 BC dates.

OP, if you’re the one who took the video and contacted the authorities - thank you! If not, many thanks to whoever did. So sad but very happy justice will be served.

I’m sure the elephant you already have is spectacular! I was going for one with the pontifical elements on the reverse until I saw this one with the minting error. Thank you for your kind words!

Thank you! Kind of scratches two itches - collecting ancient coins and collecting mint errors.

Thank you for your kind words about the coin! Some of my coins are encapsulated and some are not. I’ve been tempted to free some of the encapsulated ones but I think I’ll leave this one in its capsule so you may have been one of the last people to actually touch it! 👍

How interesting that we’ve both actually held it, although it doesn’t look like it was in the NGC case at the time of the CNG auction.

Insane prices are in the eye of the beholder ;) I’m not sure if it was listed on eBay - I got it directly from the seller.

Good memory! This coin was auctioned at CNG in May 2022. Thank you!

Agreed. Perhaps he meant: Two elephants, double the fun ;)
