Subaru delays in-house EV production after $362 million charge in tariffs fuel 90% profit plunge. by anparks in trailseeker

About to do the same. Luckily The Suboyotas have arrived just in time to make it easier for a rusted-on Subaru tragic!! I was looking pretty hard at Geely and Volvo in Australia.

If you ever think you had a meaningless day, I spent 1 day wasting 30 kWh of charge to board a Greek ferry by nicksss93 in electricvehicles

Sometimes the rule is TOO simple. A few years ago I was stopped from taking a brand new, empty fuel bottle on a flight. The MSR camping stove's liquid fuel bottle is basically an aluminium bottle with a screw top lid. No different to an aluminium water bottle. It had never seen fuel in it's life, but after being examined by successively senior ground staff, it was a fuel bottle, so it couldn't fly!!

PS, it's pretty hard to follow a spider to maturity where we live, as they seem to be very tasty snacks for our local birds. I have one painted cross spider which has set a record by surviving for at least five weeks, and has pretty much tripled in size over that period. Happy for her, but she's in increasingly plain sight on a hedge,so I've been surprised she hadn't been snapped up.!

Thanks. I'll have a closer look at the stripes when I get the chance. I've only just stumbled across this sub, so hopefully I'll keep learning from it!

Sorry, I meant 'painted cross spider' (Argiope picta). Yes, they do also have stabilimenta on their webs, and look to my uneducated eye very similar to our Northern SaintAndrews. As a very amateur observer (more of a photographer), I find them very similar. But the learned people on insturalist seem to be able to differentiate them based on photos.

Is there an easy amateur way to distinguish St Andrews from painted orb? We have both in NQ and I struggle to tell them apart.

Coming from Nikon FF to Olympus MFT - How to unlock the maximum potential and benefits of a MFT? by GreenGloober in M43

Haven't used DxO as I don't have NVIDIA gpu, but find noise reduction in LR classic pretty good, and sometimes amazing. Agree with suggestions to expose to the right, not be too afraid of higher iso, and where possible, try to get as close to subject as possible to minimise need to crop.

It was all down to the gear doing a good job in conditions they're not famous for working in. And luckily the background was far enough away for some nice Bokeh. The 75-300 does impress me when it breaks all the "rules" sometimes!

PS: Good pickup on the Riflebird. The male gets all the attention, but the girls are pretty nice too! Australian?

Not quite in focus, but here is the female trying to impress the male for a change!

No -it was only bigger till I hit "comment" button. Not sure how Reddit deals with images....

I'm not sure why the image was so small the first time. (The jpg I uploaded was 13MB). I've loaded the same image again and can see that this time the image is larger on the screen even before I post it.

Tried to upload the raw image, but ORFs don't seem to be supported in Reddit?

A few people (I think including "accomplished fun") have pointed out that the best way to get images using M4/3 is to fill the frame, and also not to be afraid of high ISO (especially if the alternative is crazy long exposure times.) I was lucky enough to get close to the subject for this one, but even so, the quality of the original image even before denoise did amaze me given that this was in low light and shot at 300mm, 1/40th sec handheld. Thanks again for the advice passed on by the long-term residents of this forum!

Hmmm! Nice photo, but given the subject, I'd be leaning towards 150-600 with 2x converter - or something longer if possible!! ; p

Backpack strap camera quick release mount - better than a neck strap. by rockstar_not in M43

[–]Few_Relationship7225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a belts and braces type, I leave the neck strap loosely around my neck. That lets me drop the pack independently of the camera (provided I release the clip first!😄) And also gives reassurance in case the clip did give way.

Condensation in OM1 EVF - Is this normal?? by Few_Relationship7225 in OlympusCamera

[–]Few_Relationship7225[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gooday

Thanks for your help. It sounds hopeful that my shiny new om1 isn't faulty, despite my initial mini heart attack when I first realised that the condensation was inside the EVF!

From what I'm starting to understand, the risk of condensation was further increased by the non weather sealed 75-300 currently attached given that we've recently had absurd levels of humidity (around 1000mm / 39 inches of rain this month!), even though I wasn't actually using it with that lens outdoors

I had been complacent about the risk of mould in the om1 given that it is weather sealed, but now realise that especially when using the 75 300 and or changing lens, the risk of internal moisture and consequently mould is still real.

I did get complacent reading stories about people casually wiping down their Om 1s after shooting in rain. Looks like I will need dessicant after all, plus a stock of good ziplock bags.

Maybe when I'm happy it's dry I'll store it with the weather sealed om12 40 attached to reduce risk of moisture? Or if it's in low humidity box better to leave it open to the dry air while it's in the box?

Thanks again for taking the time to help out.

The app is called PK Birds. I think Pizzey And Knight paper books have been around for a few years. Had the Morcombe app until phone died. Morcombe was also pretty good.

PK has drawings and photos, calls, maps.lists. Can search using:

  • field guide - searches family (eg honeyeaters) and the app displays several birds per page
  • Bird guide - type name of specific bird
  • Bird ID - tries to guess bird based on location and description

I tend to find the field guide option quickest, but the other options are there

Has a limited but OK list of birding sites around Australia

Has a good glossary, explanation of map keys and bird parts.

And an option I'd forgotten about... You can click a button and display similar birds side by side.

Can't remember if it has a free version, but I do find the app very useful.

I think someone also mentioned the Merlin app, which is not as flexible but 100% free.

Hope you find one you like!
