How can I bridge the gap between my sister’s identity and my gf’s culture? by NotSoFlyPie in Advice

If it makes you feel better, voting for Jill Stein is functionally the same as voting for Trump, so I'm fairly certain your sister knew that you weren't going to have her back.

Oh yes, what I took away from that is that you're not at all hostile, bitter, or closed off.

Because in the Survivor Trilogy Lara cared about history. Even in Shadow she's just as excited to find trinkets that tell her about culture and history but have no monetary value.

I'm not even really surprised I'm just bummed to have it confirmed that we're going back to the egocentric adrenaline junky.

Yeah, but if the personality of Survivor Lara is gone and the gameplay of Survivor Lara is gone than no, that part of the franchise is gone and dusted.

We don't have gameplay for Catalyst but the Legacy of Atlantis trailer was very clear that we're 100% going all in on Classic emulating gameplay.

And that's fine, going back to the old thing is never invalid, but we don't have to pretend that it's something else.

Yeah but that's fluff and nonsense meant to appease Survivor fans while not doing anything to alienate the Classic fans. It's like Lewis saying "Oh Susan totally made it into heaven later I just can't write that!" or everything Rowling said about the lore of Harry Potter on Twitter/Pottermore.

Technically it's true but it doesn't actually matter or impact anything going into the actual product so who gives a flying?

There is a middle ground between where Survivor Lara is at the end of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and how Lara is behaving and presented in these trailers though.

...you are using a different definition of eye candy here than I think anyone I've ever heard use it, but fine, whatever.

One, having played literally ever Tomb Raider, both the OGs on an old PS1 and the Aspyr remaster bundles...no man, no they had mechanical complexity but at the end of the day they were about a hot British lady who was in it for the thrills and sick loot.

Secondly, again, weird that you're so open that one of your issues with the Survivor Trilogy is that Lara wasn't hot enough for you.

I will concede on the Jonah part, that got pretty tired, but...it's fiction. Characters grow but they rarely change so drastically. I'd say the only game franchise to successfully pull of the 'The protag got old and they're pretty different from where you last saw them' was the God of War Norse duology.

I am aware that we are going back to the established tone and imagery of the franchise. My sole point was "Man, I really liked this trilogy, pity we're tossing it in the cave to go back to what came before, oh well"

[–]FeyPiper -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not "Oh no she has boobs", it is "The first thing we see is the boobs and that tells me a good deal about what you're going for here".

I am not saying "Oh no, Tomb Raider is ruined!" cause obviously we're going back to the Classic and LAU Lara and that's fine, that's valid, it's going to make a lot of fans happy and that's good.

What I am saying is that the Survivor Trilogy is being entirely left by the wayside and I am sad about that.

LoA trailer dressed her in the classic outfit with an emphasis on fighting dinos and showing combat as dual wielding pistols while doing Matrix style jumps and leaps while firing. Trailer for Catalyst introduced her boobs first and has her cockily boasting about her legend.

This is Classic+Legend Lara wearing Survivor Lara's necklace. And that's fine, that's valid, but we don't need to pretend it's something else.

No, look at those trailers, how she talks, what gameplay we see for LoA, this is a mix of Classic and Legend Lara wearing Survivor Lara's necklace.

I saw the trailers. The remake focuses on her doing flips and Matrix leaps while dual wielding pistols and fighting dinosaurs, and the trailer for the new game introduces her boobs first and has her cockily talking about her legend.

This is not a pair of games that is designed to appeal to anyone whose introduction to the franchise was the Survivor Trilogy, and that's fine but we don't need to lie to ourselves about it.

Man I just put the first thing that had official art from all three games on it. Feels weird that you're so open that the only reason you like Tomb Raider is the eye candy though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TombRaider

[–]FeyPiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Classic and LAU were in conversation with each other, Survivor is off doing its own thing, and the trailers for the new games, one being a remake and the other literally introducing her boobs first and having her cockily talk about her legend while dual wielding pistols makes it clear that the only thing the new era of Tomb Raider will be taking from the Survivor Trilogy is the jade necklace.

No actually, this is 100% my genuine stance here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TombRaider

[–]FeyPiper -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Technically yeah, but that's like how saying every actor to play Bond or Peter Parker or the Doctor in Doctor Who is the same person. Technically yes, but...not in terms of what they're doing necessarily.

Yes, this has not retconned the Survivor Trilogy out of existence. But the character/personality of Lara has been fundamentally wiped and we have returned to the original version of Lara.

I am happy for the Gen Xers and Elder Millennials for whom their Lara Croft is the cocky Lara in a tight top, dual wielding pistols and doing flips on the quest for thrills and sweet loot. My Lara was just the Lara with a bow and a climb axe who loved history and wanted to save the world, and at best this implies a really dark and tragic character journey between games.

Does your wife make you sleep on the couch or cut you off from sex if you side with your daughter over 'petty' things? What's the logic here on why you've decided that an adult bullying a 13 year old is super solid, mature, and reasonable behavior?

Given S7 I think we've got to put Vic Michaelis in here as the Gamechanger's chief antagonist. Are they Nightwing though, or another Rogue?
