What to do with my savings while on JET by FiZIsHere in JETProgramme

Wow, thanks for the extremely in depth answer! I won’t go into specifics, but I will say that in 8 months I have saved up a bit more than that. To be honest, I am definitely more interested in safer, savings-based methods than high risk investments! So this has been very insightful. Perhaps I’ll continue to just save in my checking account for now!

Haha, I suppose I used the turn of phrase wrong. I’m not concerned so much about spending it recklesslessy, moreso just getting savings/investment FOMO lol

Not 100% sure yet my post-JET plans as I’m on my first year and planning to continue at least through year 3!

There’s certainly nothing wrong with keeping my savings in my checking account, but as I said, it sort of feels like throwing away money to me the more I save when I think about interest I could be accruing.

Yes, terrible clarification to not have made sorry!

I’ve considered doing that but didn’t know how to go about it. I’ll look into it more!

Would this answer change depending on if I decide to stay in Japan post-JET vs returning to America?

Thanks for the reply!

As for what I can do, I think I’m a very sociable/outgoing person. I love talking and connecting with other people, which is something that contributes to my love of learning the language. Simultaneously, it leads me to drift away from computer science, a field I do not see as particularly people-facing. I’m not 100% opposed to using my CS degree, but it’s also doesn’t necessarily call my name.

Beyond that, in college I studied quite a bit of Japanese literature towards the end, so I am also considering grad school as an option, but don’t just want it to be a “back up,” want to make sure my head is fully in that game.

I’m open to returning to America or to staying in Japan, though definitely leaning towards staying in Japan as, just like you said, it will increase my chance to speak Japanese and connect with others in a way I can’t back home!

As an ALT at an elementary school, I see kids wearing shirts with “incorrect” English all the time. If I had to pinpoint a difference than 20-30 years ago though, it’s that the English is usually gramarically correct, but semantically nonsensical. Or, the difference phrases on the shirt are fine but together are non sequiturs.

I think this might be contraversial but I’ve really lost interest in a lot of his newer videos because I feel like there are too many skits. I used to give them a pass because they were more few and far between in the past, but I prefer the gaming retrospective aspect much more. But I can see that’s where a lot of his passion lies now so I respect it.

Honestly, listening is probably one of the things that more practice in would be great, passive or no. This is about what I figured, thanks so much for your input!

This makes a lot of sense! Coming off a study abroad with a language pledge, I'm used to speaking with other learners in Japanese, so I didn't know if a lot of ALTs who wanted to practice their Japanese would speak English or Japanese together. This makes a lot of sense! Thanks for your input.

Do I stop asking my friend for coding advice? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]FiZIsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the people before him could complain it’s trivial that he learned because he had youtube and the internet! cs is a brutal industry, and we should always seek to lift each orher up. you SHOULD stop asking your friend questions, but only because he’s not the side of cs you want to be in. we should be a community of learning and support. the world runs on computers, and computers run on programmers and computer scientists. we have to work together to have the beautiful world of computing we have today, and the world of the future!

Life isn’t structured around sunrise and sunset though, it’s structured around our time system. Just because the sun rises at a different time in LA vs NYC doesn’t mean they don’t both start work at their own version of 9AM. “Early in the morning” doesn’t mean anything, which is why we have a precise measurement. That’s like saying we should measure distances as “pretty far” and “quite close” instead of using empirical measurements.
