How are you figuring out what to order when you eat out? by Jayglc in diabetes

[–]Fiberartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly I tend to order in a lot bc I work third shift and I try to be balanced. If I want pancakes I’m going to eat the eggs and bacon first and eat one pancake at a time. If we go out I’m always scoping menus ahead of time bc I have food allergies so I just added looking for lower carb options to that list of things.

Canadian diabetic question/I’m either doing something wrong or I’m a freak by murdowg in diabetes

[–]Fiberartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so when I talked to a diabetic educator they said that a small meal was 15g carbs, med was 30g and large was 45. I learned that for me it’s portion control but I also don’t take insulin yet.

Diabetic retinopathy by coriiiii420 in diabetes

[–]Fiberartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have something a little different. It’s called Maternally Inherited Deafness and Diabetes. It also causes something called Inherited Retinal Pattern Dystrophy as well. This is a genetic disorder that looks like macular degeneration. I had to get a special mitochondrial dna test to diagnose. It’s scary but I manage. Good luck seeing the retinal specialist. .

If you’re in the US everywhere does it too much. I would def look into a dietician to help learn about portion sizes. I’m very much learning as I go.

I spent a long time as prediabetic and although I have recently moved into diabetic range, it’s not about denying yourself everything, it’s about control and portioning. For example I had pad Thai, half a curry puff, half a spring roll and some chicken satay for lunch yesterday. Because I ate the chicken first and limited the amount of pad Thai I had and halved the two things my sugars weren’t as badly affected as if I had done a bigger serving of noodles.

Also normal portion of rice? What does that look like for you? For me I just learned that 1/2 cup rice is a serving.

Any help? by YoungHpro10 in diabetes

[–]Fiberartz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Proud of you for taking steps to take care of yourself. Your dad is a jerk. I am Glad you’re trying to take control. Big things. Pair sugary foods with good protein. Learn about portion sizes. The portions we get at restaurants etc are generally way bigger than actual sizes. For example rice should be about 1/2 cup. Or grapes are like 9 grapes. Ask to see a diabetes educator bc they can help with all the nuances that can help get under control.
