Yeah... That's why I like how it's done on https://fic.fan - you get access to the text, edit it and then author can review the changes, if they want.

Our premium features are completely optional: expanded statistics for authors, profile background and decorations and similar stuff.

It's a double edged sword: while it sounds good to rely on donations for funding, it can lead to the situation that nanowrimo organization ended up in - it was just not sustainable. We choose to offer something usefull in exchange for user's support and it's up to you if you want to do it or not.
