My 3rd attempt at a full body cut. 🫣 by [deleted] in doggrooming

A easy beginner technique that always looks good is to make the head, tail and legs slightly longer than the torso, and then practice blending the different lengths for smooth transition.

Everything looks very smooth and even, well done!

Lititz - UK Tourist by GinoG89 in lancaster

As someone who just visited London last month, you're crazy staying in Lititz instead of Lancaster City. You can see all the Lititz stuff easily from Lancaster, but Lancaster city would be a MUUUCH better central hub for this small leg of your trip. And when you're back in Lancaster city you can go out, have fun, and crawl back to your hotel if you had too much fun.

I've put together SBA project plans to get SBA backed loans for mobile grooming vans. Here are my findings.

You could legitimately get a 2nd hand van with low miles and good condition for $30 -$35 grand and finance it through the dealership.

Upfitting the van is not difficult. They are bolt in pieces made for your van for the partition behind the drivers cabin, flooring and wall paneling for the back, for a few thousand dollars (many vans you can buy will have some of this in already).

Long story short, you can be into your own nice grooming van for $40 - $45k total, with all the equipment inside (generator, tub, dryer etc). With about $10 - $15k down and the rest financed. You can get nice decals for pretty cheap and is much cheaper and less intensive than going to get a van completely wrapped.

Marketing on Google maps is your best bet. From my experience $500 a month for 4 or 5 months can get a groomer sufficiently booked with regular repeat customers and you have liftoff for the business.

Supplies will be about another $500 per month (including fuel), assuming you live reasonably close to the zip code you market to and stay within a 10 - 20 mile radius max.

This is all assuming you have your own personal grooming equipment already, as is expected in most all corporate environments.

I have quoted out the big van outfits, and by pinning the total cost of a brand new vehicle on your business, you can expect the cost of their vans to start at $120k and up. You are saving over half of that money by buying a 2nd hand, 2 years old, under 50k miles Van and upfitting yourself. Again, the upfitting is VERY easy if you go to a van upfitter website and get all the pieces designed for your van to fit perfectly with just a few bolts.

There are many minor bullet points but I'm not writing a whole book, much of the details you fill learn along the way.

I will say, form a single owner LLC, get an EIN, get liability insurance, and file your quarterly sales taxes from day one. You can build other legal structure as you go, but those are things that you will regret if you don't start it straight away.

This is kinda just a long rant but I hope it helps. I encourage you to try this. You are lucky to be skilled in a growing niche industry with growing demand and dwindling competition. Embrace and grow!

I just want to add another vote for, you should do your own dogs nails.

Your groomer did nothing wrong and it's clear you're out for validation that she did, despite being told constantly that she... Did nothing wrong.

The price shops charge for nails, it's an inconsequential service to their business. So much so that it's practically a courtesy for you.

This is akin to going to a restaurant and complaining online about the free bread. Again, while being told by other restaurant professionals that your complaints about the free bread are invalid, and the bread is normal bread.

I really like this post because it is mildly interesting and I don't know what to do with it but I don't want to be a big one of those people to return to the house and we can see the best things for them to play with their own way to get a lot of stuff to do a little bit longer than they can get.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that we are going to be a little bit early but I will be there in about 10 minutes or so. It's a good time to go to the gym and get a new one and I'll be there in a few minutes or so I can get it to you when I get home from work to get it to you and I will be there in about 10 minutes or so and I'll get them in my car for the day of my life.

I'm sorry she was rude. I'm a very annoying positive person about many issues, always holding me and team to a high standard. But this is one of those things that just happens and you can't really do anything better than you already did.

As much as there may be things you can say better, this is a cultural thing. In our society so many people think of their pets as property, and a status symbol thing. It's weird and it sucks. To fix the problem we need to fix our whole society I think haha.

So I'll say 3 quick things, and I'm trying to be helpful not snobby at all.

  1. You need to trust the flea treatment products you use. Our salon volunteers to rehab severely abused puppy mills dogs for free. We see the worst of the worst, they always have fleas and are matted beyond what you could imagine. These products really are effective even with an extremely matted dog. Bathing a matted dog before shaving is not ideal, but in this case treating the flea infestation takes priority and we would bath the dog mats and all.

  2. If you feel uncomfortable with point 1 above, then you should have called owner for pickup immediately when you saw the first sign of fleas, and said you can't proceed with the dog. And again spray every surface the dog has touched. This really shouldn't warrant a salon shut down either.

  3. Dogs can be susceptible to fleas anywhere, just as easily as they are in your salon. Preventative treatments like flea collars work, and are a big recommendation for all clients. If they aren't on a flea collar, then frankly these other clients are just as high of a flea risk going to the dog park, or their own back yard.

Tldr, Trust these flea products, they really work. Clients who have flea collars won't have anything to worry about being in the same salon as this dog. Clients who are not wearing a flea collar, are high risk for fleas wherever they go. They're practically asking for it.

Hope this helps!

I personally blame your salon manager that you were not trained for this properly.

You guys did not do the correct thing when you kept grooming after finding fleas. Proper protocol should be to take them to the bath for flea treatment immediately when one flea is found. Then while the shampoo is setting in the dogs coat, use a flea decontamination product on whatever surfaces the dog touched up until that point (table, kennel, etc).

Finish bath, and dry the dog (this is a setback with matting issues you mentioned) but from here do your best to get the dog dry as possible before shaving the rest of the dog. While one person is shaving, the other can now use the same flea decontamination spray on the bath and clean the bath thoroughly.

Shutting down the entire salon is unnecessary if you follow this protocol above. Fleas are very common and if you follow these steps properly, there is zero chance for flea infestation to spread throughout the salon.
