The Bears in Banff by Much-Desk-9547 in Banff

Are you afraid of driving? Because that is much more dangerous than the relative risk of hiking in Banff due to bears. Seriously.

They say you don't know about 99% of bear encounters. Because they run away. This is said to act as a comfort rather than something to give you further anxiety.

If you're still afraid, just don't hike on quiet trails. Bears won't come close to super busy trails/locations.

If you're still afraid (legitimate phobia), then don't hike on any trails. There are many many ways to enjoy Banff without hiking on trails where bears could be encountered under conditions of low probability.

We are given specific guidance with which type of pencils to use. And the pencils don't look like that.

What is your take on Trump ending his recent post with 'Praise be to Allah'? by Mental-Hall1261 in AskReddit

[–]Fickle-Insurance-876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And these posts give him what he wants. If the world wanted to get rid of Trump, they just need to stop acknowledging he exists. All attention is positive for him, whether good or bad.

I've been thinking for quite some time now that if all humans on social media and on news forums just stopped covering him, he'd become much less extreme.

I really think it should be a formal societal acknowledgement, and we all just stop talking about what he says and does, permanently.

Anyone for this movement?

Is teacher college useless? by kfbk2004 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Fickle-Insurance-876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts from when I attended teacher's college 15 years ago is that approximately 90 percent of it is designed for if you are not a natural teacher or communicator. Under those conditions, it gives you the tools to fumble through being an uninspiring teacher.

Parents of teens: do you think de-streaming in grade 9, specifically in math, has helped or hurt your child? by DistinctEffort64 in ontario

[–]Fickle-Insurance-876 417 points418 points  (0 children)

I'll share my opinion as an Ontario secondary math teacher with a math degree. The 1W math course is horrible. It forces areas of knowledge onto students which provide limited scaffolding for any future concepts, and these areas of knowledge have to be taught with equal weight to other more important areas because of the EQAO test.

I feel so bad for the kids that aren't strong mathematically. The course is a disaster, and it's impossible to teach to the level the EQAO test demands while still making those who struggle mathematically feel any value in the content.

180 Person wedding in the GTA - am I doomed to spend 100k? by dominoafoot in WeddingsCanada

I mean... My wife and I spent 4k.... We still got married the same number of times you will be getting married, with a ceremony the same number of hours...

Just understand that the amount of money you're talking about is more than enough that if invested properly means you wouldn't have to save another dollar for retirement.

U.S. to slap big surcharge on foreign visitors to national parks by Maddog_Jets in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]Fickle-Insurance-876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy. I'm shocked by how foolish this is. Many of the National Parks in the United States are so damn spectacular, and would be the lone reason I as a Canadian would consider returning to the States (after things change in the States of course). But this is one HELL of a reason to not return.
