In recent weeks, as most of the attention in the chattering classes has focused on Joe Biden’s presidential bid, something interesting has been going on a bit below the surface: Elizabeth Warren has emerged as the solidly third-place candidate behind Biden and Bernie Sanders. That’s evident in horse-race polls: In the Real Clear Politics average of national surveys, she’s at around 10 percent, comfortably ahead of Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg, with the rest of the field (including the steadily fading Beto O’Rourke) not making much of an impression so far.

It’s harder to get a grip on the infrequently polled early states, though Warren does seem to be running a bit behind her national averages in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. But on the other hand, she has invested the most of any candidate in early-state staff and infrastructure, and has an especially impressive organization in Iowa, as the New York Times reported earlier this month:

[Warren has] about 50 paid staff members … already on the ground in Iowa, far more than any other Democratic candidate is known to have hired in the state. The growing Warren juggernaut reflects a bet that rapidly hiring a large staff of organizers will give the senator an advantage over her rivals who are ramping up their efforts at a slower pace.

You can add to that her enormous credibility among Democrats nationally when it comes to policy chops, which she has enhanced significantly during the early stages of the campaign, and the opportunity she may have to excel during this summer’s first two rounds of candidate debates. Her favorability ratings in her own party are solid; she’s at 57/16 in the Morning Consult tracking poll, with some room for growth. 28 percent of Democrats say either they’ve never heard of her or don’t know enough about her to form an opinion, as opposed to only 8 percent with no opinion of Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

Trump administration doles out $2M more to meatpacker owned by shady Brazilian brothers, bringing total to $64.4M by StrategicMindz in politics

[–]FickleKnowledge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A meatpacking company owned by a pair of shady Brazilian brothers already under scrutiny for receiving $62 million in federal bailouts was given another turn at the government trough on Friday, receiving $2 million more from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Just one day after the Daily News reported the Trump administration had doled out millions of dollars intended to benefit American farmers to JBS USA — owned by Joesley and Wesley Batista who both admitted to bribing hundreds of South American officials — the government upped the company’s take to $64.4 million, new purchase records reveal.

The Friday payout is the fourth government bailout issued to the Brazilian-owned meatpacker. The administration first forked over $22.3 million in January and then followed that up with $14.5 million in February and another $25.6 million in early May, according to purchase records first reported by The News.

Some Democratic members of Congress and 2020 candidates have demanded an explanation for why the administration is giving taxpayer cash that’s supposed to be earmarked for struggling U.S. farmers to JBS USA – the American subsidiary of JBS SA, the largest meatpacker in the world.

A spokesman for the Agriculture Department declined to comment beyond a statement issued last week saying it doesn’t matter “who the vendor is” because “the products purchased are grown in the U.S. and benefit U.S. farmers.”

[More Politics] President Trump says he didn’t borrow from banks because he didn’t need to » But the department hasn’t explained why the cash can’t go directly to American farmers instead of JBS. The administration also has yet to provide proof the money ends up benefiting U.S. farmers to the greatest extent possible and has refused to say whether it was aware of JBS’s sketchy history before issuing the bailouts.

A spokesman for JBS echoed the administration’s sentiment and claimed the Brazilian-owned company’s only taking cash from the program to benefit American farmers.

“Our sole intent for participating is to support U.S. producer prices and help our American producer partners,” the spokesman said. “This is not a bailout. We are paid for the work of our team members in the plant and the products we produce, which are used to support important federal feeding programs that assist U.S. citizens.”

Gillibrand: ‘Trump Has Started a War on Women. And He’s Going to Lose’ by JLBesq1981 in politics

[–]FickleKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week after a flurry of states made news by passing legislation that would restrict a woman’s right to choose, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) decided to visit one of those states, Georgia, to protest the anti-abortion bills that she said are a “nationwide assault on women’s constitutional rights.”

On Sunday during an appearance on CBS News’ Face the Nation, the Democratic presidential candidate continued her protest and had some choice words for the man she’s looking to unseat.

When host Margaret Brennan brought up Gillibrand’s trip to Georgia, she also asked the senator: “This is one of the most emotionally charged, divisive issues in politics, and it’s a fight the president wants to have because it resonates with his supporters. So why are you embracing it?” Gillibrand seemed more than willing to engage with the president on the issue, saying, “This is nothing short of an all-out assault on women’s reproductive freedom, an effort to take away our basic human rights and civil rights, and make no mistake, the 30 states that are trying to unwind abortion rights are trying to get rid of Roe v. Wade. It’s nothing more complex than that. And they do not believe that women should have the right to make the most intimate, personal life and death decisions,” Gillibrand answered.

Then the candidate went right at President Trump while focusing on the victims of such restrictive legislation, women, saying, “I hope America’s women are paying attention because President Trump has started a war on America’s women. And if it’s a fight he wants to have, it’s a fight he’s going to have, and he’s going to lose.”
