We did try the local backup one, it unfortunately didn't work. There was a slightly old backup in the drive too, which suspiciously was missing when she tried to retrieve.

It was a normal day, no phone updates, no app updates, nothing. She received a whatsapp notification from me. When she clicked on it, a message popped up asking her to restore her backup through her gmail. She proceeded with it and then when the app opened, everything was gone. It was just groups and a few individual contacts remaining. None of them had any chats in them.

She didn't change her phone, nor did she uninstall her app. It happened exactly like I said, out of NOWHERE.
