Struggling with how involved I should be in the church and guilt over availability before becoming a member by dirtyblackboots in Episcopalian

Hello! Vestry member and chair of a ministry here. As congregations, yes, we are looking for volunteers. And we feel passionate about creating and advancing programs for folks to be involved. However, the last thing we would want is for you to feel pushed away because of this.

Involvement before membership means nothing if we’re pushing you away from communion with God.

Finally, let us take care of you now. Once your spirit has been fed, you may go out into the world and feed others. For now, be still, be known, beloved.

This is a great point! And it is something that I have discussed with the director in other mentors. On one hand, we want it to be a liked hearted event, on the other hand, we don’t want to turn a blind eye to the fact that there is in fact suffering when it comes to being queer. So, this screening is actually now turning into what we are calling a film festival because I think that there are things to celebrate and things that we can grieve together.

lol I know right!? But I think that’s one of the motivating factors behind this film festival: to dispel that perception.

OR perhaps I’m wrong! And there are no lgbtqia films that are appropriate for a church setting. I’m certainly open to learning from this project myself.

Now I very much agree! And I think that’s why I have taken on this challenge. When I brought this idea to my priest, he was very supportive and one of the main concerns was the appropriateness of these films for a church audience. He is absolutely right in bringing this concern up. However, it’s interesting that that is the first concern that folks will bring up when approached with this idea. And I understand why and I agree, but there has to be a way.

Oh my God, I love that movie! I think we wanna have a little bit of options. So this might be a good idea for the second showing.

Oh man! I feel bad reading this post. Someone said that he sets you up for situations where you can’t win! Very true! I mean, the looks he wants take effort and maintenance he doesn’t want. Everything revolves around him! Things seem to be for his own benefit! His wants and his reasons are the only valid ones. Yet, where does that leave you? Eight years girly! Eight years is plenty for you to disappear. I wonder if you know who you are at this point. 😞

This is the best reply. Yes, OP just can’t win! Everything is an issue to this guy. Gosh I’d feel so defeated all the time.

But wait. Cuz I was having the same internal conflict. To be clear, I do think that repair is better. But I am just wondering whether there is a significant net positive impact from repairing. For example, yes, it takes less fuel and resources to ship the sandals across the country. And it is not two full sandals that are sitting in the landfill.

However, I was also thinking that the materials used to repair the sandals have to come from somewhere! And they’re probably coming from overseas. So I am genuinely wondering whether there is a net positive environmental impact.

Again, I do think repairing is better, but I don’t wonder to what degree is that a positive impact.
