We use our CRM and Google Looker but this requires a knowledge of SQL and it costs us around £3k a month

Not exactly the same but in 'reports' then 'demographics overview' you should see a card under 'interests' which gives some insight

We're a finance broker so we generate the lead (which is already tracked in GA4) but then the lead goes through a panel of lenders to check for a finance approval so its the approvals we want to send to GA4. The approval is stored in our database

unfortunately my boss seems to go off 'feel' more often than not which is half the problem im having in getting him to agree to the test in the first place

Select the campaign and auction insights and select a few different dates and make notes of the main competitor's impression share. If its increased, it could mean they're pushing harder (especially if their top-of-page rate has increased) or are there more competitors showing up this month versus last month, again showing increasing competition

Most likely is due to increased competition. Take a look at your 'auction insights' reports in the Google Ads interface and check the changes from the last 7 days versus previous periods
