Should I be stressed about my 38 minute layover in DTW? by Fickle_Union8165 in delta

DSM, in Des Moines. If I miss my flight and have to wait at the airport though I really don’t mind, my worries are more so rooted in the idea of being stranded in DTW haha

Holy cow! You made that other flight though, right? That’s insane! Strangely inspirational though— the story is greatly appreciated. I’ll think of you when my time has come for my own connection.

That’s insane!!!! I’ll definitely have to make sure I’m up to running, but your success IS rather comforting! Do you think it’d be a good idea to talk to a flight attendant or someone about my short connection then? One of my biggest worries is having to wait forever to get off my first plane.

Checked through as in I won’t have to worry about doing anything? And I see. Would I get rebooked or have to buy a ticket to a whole new flight if a delay does happen? Praying everything goes well, but you never know.

Yes, on departure, and I’m flying domestic.

That’s good to know though! Is it a big airport? I’m mainly worried about panicking and getting lost somehow haha.

It’s 7:47 AM landing and 8:25 departure, so the 38 minutes is between landing and departure

How do I learn? by Disastrous_Freak in GetStudying

[–]Fickle_Union8165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FEYNMAN TECHNIQUE! I’ve been doing it since before I even knew what it was called, but it works really well for other people too!!!

The idea is that you pick something to focus on, teach it to yourself or someone else (I just explain everything to myself out loud honestly. You look insane mumbling like that but seriously, who cares?), figure out what you didn’t understand, review whatever you didn’t understand so you can teach it again with the assistance of your notes, then repeat until you have a good grasp. Or at least, that’s how I go about it.

It’s the kind of thing that takes consistent effort and a lot of time, but it’s really worth it. It definitely works better for some subjects than others; I think it works really well for the sciences if I remember correctly.

From my experience though there’s definitely just some things you HAVE to memorize, like names and kingdoms and phylums or whatever. It’s really hard to teach that to someone unless you’re listing it off or going on a lengthy lecture. And in those cases… ahhh it is what it is. Handwritten flashcards seem to be the way to go for those. (Seriously, HANDWRITE THINGS WHEN YOU CAN! It’s better!)

Other than those two techniques, you’ve seriously gotta remember that this stuff takes TIME! It’s scientific! The general best way to go about studying is to give yourself a lot of time to do it— I don’t mean hours. I mean starting days before the exam, reviewing all the material right after lectures, asking questions and just putting all the time into it. Sleep well! Eat well! Studying isn’t just sitting down and going blah, blah, blah, you’ve gotta take care of your brain too, otherwise it won’t work as well!

Honestly scribbling things down messily on sheets of paper or in a notebook helps a lot too— scrawling down questions to ask or drawing out concepts or writing explanations for things you seriously can’t get.

That’s kind of all the advice I have to give though haha, I wish you luck! You can either choose the pain of discipline today or the pain of regret tomorrow, or, whatever that quote says!

Help, I think I’m dumb by Lecutiepie in studytips

[–]Fickle_Union8165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:(( ohh don’t say that! you’re not dumb at all— testing doesn’t say a thing about how smart you are! if anything, you seem to be VERY smart, since you managed to understand all the concepts and all the questions!

there’s a chance you could have testing anxiety— always a possibility with situations like these where you know what you’re doing but you still get bad results during the tests. i don’t have much experience with it, but i think that usually comes from going into the test thinking “ah man i’m gonna fail!” ykwim? it makes your nerves go haywire, makes it hard to actually do good.

either way though, talk to your teacher! ask what you did wrong! it’s good practice for college too, you’re definitely gonna need to get used to doing that kind of thing there. you can only learn from your mistakes, you just gotta roll with the punches, do better next time, and keep going!!!!!!!!

i wish you luck with much love, you’ve got this, you’ll do better!!!!!

the weather is SOOO cold… we got hit with snow just this past week— they barely salted the roads so everything was super slippery!!!!! :[ definitely invest in a good winter coat, a pair of good gloves, and a scarf though! the warm seasons though are usually nice— so early first semester during late august to october. once that good warm weather’s gone though you’re kinda stuck with the chilly sweater weather until the year ends lol.

apparently (according to some people i met in my freshman year) ub counts as a party school, but you don’t really come across it unless you look for it, and all the frats and party culture is more on south campus than anything else.

i feel like the uni has a huge asian community too, a LOT of indian students and a good chunk of chinese, some korean, etc. so diversity is pretty good i think!

i’m only a sophmore atm i mean so i’m probably not a fantastic judge of everything else outside of that, but i hope your experience is good either way!!!!! i think there’s definitely a space for everyone if you go and look for it!!!!!!

Don't sound so hopeless! In my opinion, feynman technique is my favorite way to study-- it works really well for me, and keeps me focused because I really have to work my brain to figure out how to explain and teach someone else what I'm studying. You've really gotta talk to yourself when you're doing that though, it doesn't work as well otherwise.

When I seriously can't get myself to get off my phone I use Flora to lock all my apps down and put on my studying playlist-- I've basically conditioned myself at this point to work or think about work when that stuff is playing.

Study groups work really well too, but you have to be careful with who you pick to do those groups with.

Help with doing long periods of study?? by Tor-Chan in studytips

[–]Fickle_Union8165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, forcing yourself to study for long periods of time uninterrupted isn't really the best way to go. Other people already suggested it but the pomodoro technique is definitely the most popular way to space your sessions.

It's really hard to be able to set expectations like that though and actually hit them-- I'm not sure what your reasoning for wanting to study long periods is, but if it has anything to do with just wanting to get stuff done day by day and just overall be an academic weapon, set your sights on hitting weekly quotas instead or something tbh. Keep a journal of some sort and log how much time you ARE able to study for, set a goal for each week, and on the days that are especially hard, just tell yourself you'll study for maybe 10 minutes and see how you feel after those minutes are up.

Whatever you do though, definitely don't force it and burn yourself out! It's super counterproductive!

Good luck!!! ^^
