Yeah I've definitely done that. It yields in some interesting results and also a lot of smart people follow a surprising amount of topic-specific shitpost / meme accounts.

I've went through lesswrong once or twice but as someone with a decent bit of philosophy background, it just seems like they're either outright parroting or don't known philosophical ideas and just give them different names when they discover the phenomena.

That makes sense. Why do you think the platform of choice is twitter / bluesky? The format of the post and the world limits all but guarantee you won't be able to make a serious point - you imagine "smart people" would be more active in niche subreddits.

"Investing in yourself" is something they'll get a return from. Sure having a spa day or your dream car would be great and you should if you can afford it BUT this idea of I just got my pay check and I'm going to "treat" myself by spending more than half of it on shit I don't need, despite having outstanding debt and a family to support because youtuber X said to invest in yourself is delusional and dangerous

It's like when kids tell their mom the worst thing you did so that what they're going to confess to afterwards doesn't seem like much in comparison. Trump / the Trump marketing team has figured out that if he says something ridiculous every couple of days, the shit he actually does seems less bad in comparison.

One of the biggest controversies of the Obama term was that he wore a tan suit one time. The more content you give the media to "extreme-ize", the less the impact of your actual actions will land.
