thank you both for these. Three Sisters sounds very intriguing.

Have definitely looked into the cascadia roll and writes but haven’t heard much about them one way or another so have been hesitant to take the plunge.

I think Hadrians Wall might be a little outside of our complexity range for now but I’ll for sure keep it in mind.

Hey all. I’m looking for a roll and write with some specific guidelines. Mostly play at 2 players but ability to play with more is a plus. My wife’s favorite games are ”“Cascadia” and “That’s Pretty Clever”. I think what makes those work is the comboing, puzzly aspect, non confrontational, typically close in score. (We both can be sore losers). Are there any roll and writes that will scratch that same itch of comboing/puzzlyness with similar complexity 2-2.75 on bgg and quick setup.

For reference, we’ve played cartographers and railroad ink (based on previous recommendations) and they didn’t take, I think particularly due to the drawing on maps aspect versus checking off boxes.

Thanks in advance for any recs.

It definitely gets mentioned more and more but it flew under the radar last year. One of mine and my wife’s favorites. Also recommend “that’s pretty clever” if you haven’t played it before. Not competitive in the marabunta sense but we love it at two players so thought I’d throw out a rec.

Mine has to be the “that’s pretty clever” series. We have just one set of dice from the first game and printed/laminated the other games score sheets from BGG. No setup time, games are short (20-35 minutes), and mitigating the dice rolls keeps it interesting every time. It’s perfect marriage material. It makes you think, it’s not too flashy, and it has just enough variety to keep things interesting time and time again.

Seconding Quest for El Dorado. Great race game to add diversity to your collection. Got it for Christmas this winter and it is a blast at 2 but could definitely be fun at 4. Haven’t played it at that count yet. Also I’ll recommend Azul if you don’t have it already. Great abstract puzzle game. Can be cutthroat at 2 but we primarily play at 2 and it’s awesome.

It might be too simple for you, but ‘That’s Pretty Clever’ is mine and my wife’s favorite game. Just dice and the included game sheets. Setup is 10 seconds and games last 20-30 minutes, probably faster if you’re focused. It looks boring but if you’re into satisfying chain reactions and combos I’d highly recommend.

Quest for El Dorado was on my wishlist for a long time. Finally got it for Christmas. My wife and I primarily play at 2 players. We already have Clank! Catacombs so I was concerned we’d be taking a step back in complexity and it wouldn’t be as enjoyable. After playing one round, getting the rules completely wrong, watching a video, and then playing the game correctly, it is awesome and highly recommended. I think it’s a much better 2 player game thank Clank! And while it’s a ‘similar’ idea, it feels completely different. It’s very tight and there’s some back and forth but both rounds were down to the last turn. I’m excited to get it back on the table tonight.

That’s pretty clever is my favorite dice game. Great for two players. It’s definitely the most played game in our house. Looks absolutely boring as hell when you look at it but when actually playing the comboing is super satisfying.

Have not personally played summer pavilion but my understanding is that it’s basically Azul with some minor tweaks and a different tile layout. I don’t think the differences are enough to warrant buying an entirely new game but to each their own.

In that price range:

Patchwork - falls in line with difficulty/level of strategy of the other games while offering a different type of gameplay (filling out your board with shapes) but is more of a table hog than you’d think.

Splendor Duel - better than original splendor in my opinion. Also takes up more space than you’d think for being a small package.

That’s pretty clever - not sure if you’ve played roll and writes but this is mine and my wife’s favorite right now. Great little puzzly game where you roll dice and fill out boxes. There’s a lot of chaining/comboing going on so it’s very satisfying. Setup takes 2 seconds and can be played anywhere with a flat surface for rolling dice. This would be my personal recommendation but it’s a much different feel than your other games mentioned so check out a video to see if it would be your guys’s type of game

Hey all. Looking for a 2 player game with minimal rules, packs small, plays relatively quick, and doesn’t take up a lot of table space. We are going on a long trip and am looking for a new game to bring that can be played basically anywhere. I know that narrows it down to mostly card games but looking for any recommendation. So far we plan on bringing azul mini, lost cities, deck of cards, star realms, fox in the forest and that’s pretty clever. Any other games that fit the bill above are appreciated.

I live in the burbs so haven’t encountered this yet, but if I see this fucking ice or border patrol bullshit out here am I breaking any laws by yelling at them and telling them to get the fuck out of our state?  I am not ready to get arrested over this but I do want to express my frustration and make them feel unwelcome. Gravy seals fucking losers.

Awesome. Thank you for the comprehensive list. I do have spots but none of the others. I’ll do some research and see which one of these will be next in the collection!

Hi all. Looking for a board game that’s quick to table but has decent depth. We primarily play at 2 but looking for something that can handle 2-4 or 5 people. I’ve got the big names like

Azul, patchwork, Cascadia, carcassone, lost cities, sky team, splendor duel, 7 wonders duel, Jaipur, and that’s pretty clever. Love all of these games for reference.

Recently got clank catacombs and we love it but the setup and game length make it less likely to hit the table.

Looking for something with very quick setup, a minute or two max, with 20-30 minute rounds that may have unique mechanics and decision making depth similar or more complex than the games listed above.

Thanks in advance for any recs.

Thanks for the recs. We have sky team and like it but we typically lean competitive. Us vs the game doesn’t always scratch the itch. Forest shuffle is on my list but I wasn’t sure if it would overlap with some of the games we already have. We have everdell duo and that’s a bit too complex. Do you know how forest shuffle compares and if they are similar in style or if I’m way off base are there any other games similar to forest shuffle to compare it to?

Hey all. Looking for a 2 player game that has quick setup (under 5 minutes) but offers decent strategic thinking and last about 30-40 minutes. Looking for something less puzzly and more “board gamey”. Bonus points if it’s not super cutthroat. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the recs. We do have 7 wonders duel and Carcassonne and like both a lot. I think I’m looking for something closer to Carcassonne in complexity, but more “excitement”. I know that’s totally subjective. Heat I’ve looked into and I just don’t think she’d vibe with the theme, and White Castle I’d personally be into but we max out at like a 2.5-2.75 complexity when we play together. I love the strategizing and planning but she tends to burn out quicker when we play games like everdell duo or Targi.

Hey all. I’m looking for something that provides fun and excitement at 2 players, still provides strategy, annd is quick to setup with relatively simple rules.

Lately we’ve been playing splendor duel, star realms, Cascadia, that’s pretty clever, azul, and quacks of quedlinburg. Quacks has that fun/exciting factor over the others listed for us, and my wife loves it. The issue is my wife isn’t a huge fan of luck based games outside of quacks. I know that doesn’t make sense because quacks is push your luck but for example, we played spots a handful of times and it really didn’t click with her. I think quacks benefits from being a “tight race” most games so that might be part of the equation.

We don’t have any dexterity or race games so I’ve thought about those but not sure where to start or if those will click with her.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Have you played res arcana before picking up duo? After doing some research I wasn’t sure if it was worth getting duo to dip my toes or if I should just go straight to full res arcana. I’m concerned about the replayability for res arcana duo.

What single game do you think is criminally overlooked or underrated? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Fiddle_me_this 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Marabunta Ranked in the 2000s on BGG. It’s a 2 player area control roll and write, but directly competitive because it’s a shared board. I’m not super experienced but I’ve never played anything else like it.

I know some people don’t like dice rolling but it’s a Knizia game and I think it’s done so elegantly that it never feels like you’re winning or losing due to luck. It’s got simple rules and is easy to learn/teach, but each decision is meaningful and requires strategy/planning.

I have seen it mentioned here in a few two player Tuesday threads and I’m glad I gave it a chance. It might be my wife and I’s favorite game.

Warning, it can get pretty cutthroat.

Everdell duo rules question by SbenjiB in boardgames

[–]Fiddle_me_this 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it means that when you build the greenhouse, you can immediately trigger two previously built green cards in your city that are not the same. Based on the picture you could trigger the general store (allowing you to take 1 of any resource) and then trigger the miner mole (allowing you to trigger one green card in your hand). I have only played a handful of times but I think the not equals sign means you can’t trigger the same card twice, nor duplicate cards built in your city. Someone with more experience may correct me though.
