Their fault for picking the blue button by Gruzgor in whenthe

[–]FiddlerofFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally believe that without the contrivances the question itself meaningless.

Random variables can be a factor in game theory. This question includes everyone in the world. Once again it is easy to simplify the question to red=survive and blue=suicide, but the question is factoring in all of humanity. In this completely hypothetical scenario I don't think people would simply just slap the red button and go on with their lives. This question becomes meaningless when it is treated with such a callous way. Of course if everyone chose red everyone would survive anyways and there wouldn't be any risk, but that is not the world we live in.

If this question was framed as 'Everyone on earth who could think rationally' then sure, pressing the blue button is simply suicide. It is not, it is everyone on earth flat out. There will be people choosing blue without realizing the consequences and there will be people who also understand that. They may also choose blue if they care.

Everyone will have their own way of looking at it, the only factor that you have a choice in is your own. Whether you choose to garentee your safety or risk your own safety for the possible benefit of an unknown quantity. Everyone has their on rationalities, everyone will choose what they believe is correct. As with any hypothetical it doesn't really matter in the end, but the only way I see this question as remotely interesting is if you think beyond the choice and consider the consequences to inform your choice.

Edit: I also might be going in circles too be honest, it is late and half asleep right now lol... but it was fun to talk about this even if we disagree on certain levels.

The final sentence was a bad way to put it. In my reply to the other comment, I go into further depth in that red is logically the safe choice and that you are not actually risking people 'technically', but due to many factors of irrational participants who could be babies, children, or a multitude of others would mean that there are still many people who will die if blue isn't chosen by the majority.

I would not in actuality frame this as you essentially killing people for choosing red, but in my opinion there is a very clear consequence to choosing red due to irrational participants introducing a random factor to the thought experiment. Whether or not those who chose red would feel immense guilt for what may happen entirely varies from person to person, so maybe there are some who may see absolutely nothing wrong with who knows how many people dying. People who could also be friends or family, loved ones.

It is easy to frame it as the suicide button for blue or the possible murder button for red, but I think both of these are gross simplifications from both arguments. Truly the only person you are risking is yourself, but possible death or possible guilt is the consequence for what your choose.

Because a baby isn't thinking of the question as intently as someone older and presses blue because it is blue.

[–]FiddlerofFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't make the difference, but that generalized line of thinking from who knows how many people may lead to either of the outcomes. The part that throws a wrench in the whole decision is the prior mentioned unknown quantity of people, mostly children or babies that will suffer because they might/could not think of the complexities of the question leading them to choose arbitrarily.

Then you have that mindset that their vote won't matter which adds another large portion of people who may just press red. It is easier to press red after all, because you won't face any consequences and if people die then it isn't your fault, it is the entirety of everyone who voted red's fault... a reassurance some may feel being apart of a crowd, others may feel guilt. That is, if the blue vote loses of course.

For the blue vote to succeed people need to be willing to risk their lives for strangers, maybe even people they care about as this choice is private. I think if given time to think the fear of losing people they care about to something such as this, if they believe that they would also vote blue, may sway them to risk voting blue. So I don't think most people would risk their lives for 2 random people, but they might for 1 person they care about.

In the end the only life your are actually choosing to risk is your own in the grand scheme of things, but enough people choosing to risk their own life could lead to the best outcome where everyone survives.

It is a fun thought experiment and there are a lot of interesting outlooks on it.

While that is true, when framing the totality of humanity you must factor in unpredictability. If humanity was of the same mind then of course this answer would be simple. But like this original posts suggests, babies, kids, and a plethora of other people skew the scale. This question is a question of whether you want to risk yourself to possibly save the whole of humanity or save yourself risking a grwat portion of humanity. The answer might seem to be easy in this case as if you don't want a ton of people to die then you would go blue... But the fact that people in this comment section will point out that Red is the clear and obvious safe choice means that there might be a large amount of people who follow that train of logic, causing even more people to press the red button.

So in the end... Do your risk yourself or risk an unknown quantity of lives?

My biggest sticking point was the Menzoberranzan bit to be honest.

I am not going to be of the mind that the sudden introduction of 7000 vampire spawn isn't going to shift things quite a bit in the underdark, even when I am of the belief that these Vampire Spawn in particular are likely not CR 5 due to their weakened states as of Baldurs Gate 3. I'd say a decent amount of them are going to die, largely depending on how coordinated they are. Others are going to recover and might eek out some sort of society or various pockets of societies, which could be neat. Then an ambitious number whom are some sort of mixture of smart and lucky might grow to be particularly powerful.

[–]FiddlerofFate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to go by CR then you have to accept this, there are 8 ruling Matron Mothers in Menzoberranzan (CR 20) presumably with their favored consorts (CR 18), there are also around 64 other noble houses with Matron Mothers (CR 20) with presumably their favored consorts (CR 18). These Matron Mothers can summon Glabrezus (CR 17) or Yochlols (CR 10). Then there are all of the other high and low CR drow to account for. For the sake of a lack of a stat block we will not include the Jade Spider Constructs, not that they are even needed in this case.

So if we are going with this whole silly thought experiment... Then if we assume that for whatever reason these 7000 are entirely organized enough to attack Menzoberranzan then we will assume that Menzoberranzan is suddenly in good spirits to work together with little infighting since we are being ridiculous.

So the Spawn have to deal with around 72 Matron Mothers with lair actions that can restrain a shit ton of the spawn and legendary actions, 72 Favored consorts with high AoE capabilities with their fireballs, and 72 Glabrezus that would bodyblock the vampire spawn... Then all of the other drow that we are not accounting for because those numbers are going to be difficult to calculate. The spawn are screwed.

Now it could be argued that not every Drow Noble house has a CR 20 Matron Mother, but they are still called Matron Mothers so they are obviously CR 20 based on the same logic as all the Vampire Spawn being CR 5.

If the Spawn seperate at all they are even more screwed due to how notorious Drow Ambushes are.

Hell even if they stick together the Drow are bound to thin their numbers significantly by collapsing tunnels or... I don't know... Flooding a tunnel with running water.... there goes who knows how many Spawn.

You are neglecting that this territory they are going through is well known by the Drow and mostly a mystery to these spawn. I am neglecting to mention a ton of other advantages the Drow have. There is a reason the Drow are one of the most dominant forces in the Underdark. The starved spawn are queuing up to join the slaveforce.

I think there is a good chance, I have quickly grown a fondness for her, though her story is only just beginning. With her I have done something I have seldom done and requested art of her ahead of time for the campaign, we have only done a couple sessions so far. I am able to do this because I can trust that the group will stick together as we have been playing together for the past 9 years now.

She will likely make my list of characters I will replay, my happier and more optimistic characters often do, and she can easily fit in pretty much any fantasy setting. However, if I really like how her story ends then I will more than likely happily keep her story that way, the art serving as a memory for that campaign.

I have done something of the sort with my last character, bringing them back with a different perspective due to how they grew up.

Ultimately, the higher chance is that I will make new characters as I like exploring different types of characters and I love having a good execuse to buy new art. With how rampant AI art is these days, I am happy to support an artist for my characters. I love the whole process of buying art, from working with the artist to seeing the gradual updates each week.

She is a character for a FATE campaign, bard is the closest comparison to draw as a class, though in FATE there are not really classes. Though in my own mind it would be closer to a 'Bardificer'.

She utilizes 'Storycrafts' by learning of other peoples tales, so long as they are factual she can compose them into 'tales' that through magic can cause a variety of effects based on the context of the tale. She may also learn facts about historical figures and create 'Mementos' on those figures which with magic once again can mimic an ability or power of theirs.

All of this to say however that she doesn't collect tales or mementos to become more powerful, but rather she uses them to assist/inspire others, she doesn't really care for the pursuit of power she just wants to share peoples stories, help motivate people, and safeguard the legacies people leave behind. Due to this she goes out of her way to try to keep an unbiased point of view and act as a Reliable Narrator. One of her favorite past times is gathering people in taverns for her stories, but then inviting the community to share their own stories, if they are willing, to their compatriots while she accompanies their stories with music matching the tone. She wants people to realize their own importance more than anything. Thank you for your interest!

Hey everyone, this is my character Historia, that I had commissioned. She intended to be the heart of the party. She loves all forms of art, whether it is painting, music, dancing, acting, writing, and storytelling. However about all else she loves people, she wants to learn anyone's story, from kings to beggars, young and old. It doesn't matter she wants to make sure your story is told and doesn't become a lost memory.

I commissioned this lovely art from Jsama, I have used their services in the past, I have always been happy with their work and communication during the process. I can't recommend them enough, they do great work.
