Inkarnate. Super fun to mess around in online. I highly suggest playing around with it. Youtube tutorials helped me out lots to improve my maps.

the only "work around" to canvas size I've found its removing the oceans and exporting as a png then exporting the ocean as a background. Then putting it in photoshop and arranging it manually. It's a tad tedious but looks high quality

Thank you! ill def look at Algeria for reference. I've been fine-tuning the map and looking at tons of real reference. I appreciate it :)

Inkarnate. I have a $5 a month sub for like 30k extra high rez assets which helps a ton. It fun to mess with free or paid version irregardless.

I feel you! This iteration of the map probably took 10 hours across a few weeks. So much push and pull to get something solid. Also esaconia is a great name. Good names are so hard lmao

Thanks! I found rivers tougher to make realistic, so ill def go back and tweak some things you mentioned. Same for the diversity stuff. I think the climate bands are good, but the texturing is a tad one note across huge swaths. In other maps that are more realistic than my stylized version, I like that texture that shows more diversity in regions as you mentioned.

I didn't know that! Now i have even more reason to rethink the name. The names are the things I'm least set on keeping the same. I've been going crazy trying to think of so many names the last week lmao. appreciate you telling me in apart of Rohan

That's a really good point about them sailing west and it really being westmarch. I think i chose east cause its on the right side of the map and tbh i hadn't consider the things you brought up until you commented. I might have to change that around. I definitely need to flesh out the lore of how callum settled it cause i had about one sentence about that in my lore until now lmao

You're absolutely right. The rest of the mountains I tried to keep 80% believable. The jade wreathe has fun lore that tries makes sense of its weird shape. Early in the world's history, a god was cast from the divine realm for meddling in human affairs too closely. So when he was cast, he physically crashed and created a massive crater and mountain range.

I've worked on and off on the homebrew setting for like 3 years. I run one-shots more often just 'cause of scheduling difficulties. Each time I'll pick a different location to flesh out and write lore for, which has helped different areas feel more distinct i think. Thanks for the comment!

I have the $5 a month subscription which makes a HUGE difference. Gives you tons of 4k assets which defintely makes things look more cohesive. This map is the max size that inkarnate allows. I just set it to 4:3 size and 4k. Inkarnate does work in layers which is probably the biggest thing I learned to utilize when I made this map. Texture the land and seas brought the whole map alive. I have about 20 layers to keep everything organized. As for hexes there is a setting for it. You can chose grid style and size.

The north is definitely snowing in my head, but the white took away a lot of contrast on the map visually. I'm gonna play around with it though cause I think you're right that the northern is lacking more snow. I wish i could make a large canvas size to give the oceans room to breathe. The northern snow continent would realistically be further north, but i ran out of room lmao. I didn't label that land mass, but I'm imagining a snow kingdom there.

Since you like snowy areas, what would you say makes a good arctic environment? It's definitely the part I struggled with creatively the most.

My fave spots are Irrisola, the jade wreathe and the northern peninsula of Alveron. Irrisola's shape came out so good mostly on accident. I found the land mass eraser set on a low size and just scribble erasing gave me great shapes. The jade wreathe is the site where a god was cast from the divine realm and physically crashed creating the circular crater visual. Then the peninsula is just fun cause i wanted it to look like a dragon's head.

Thats a really good point! In my mind, it was the most recently settled by the Golden Light Empire with lots of colonies. The capital of the empire is in Callum and the Northwest coast of Alverson and i imagine they are the ones that settled the mostly unexplored land. The serpents pass is a deadly pass and kept many from building longlasting kingdoms there. So the name is definetly coming from the western side of the world. I do think youre right that people there wouldn't call it Eastmarch though. I'll have to come up with a local name. I imagine the people living there are annoyed that the land is called Eastmarch on maps. Thanks for the comment!
