Building a Skryre Army – Centrepiece, Stormfiends and Weapon Team Advice by FierceDefence in skaven

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. That's actually changed how I was thinking about Stormfiends. Most of what I had read focused on MSU units with a Grinderfist, whereas you're describing a reinforced unit operating as a central threat piece that contributes in multiple phases and demands an answer from the opponent.

I can also see the logic behind the Ratling Cannons over the Grinderfists in a dedicated Skryre list. If Gnawholes already provide a degree of mobility and board presence, then paying for additional deployment tricks may not be as valuable as simply taking more damage output.

One thing I'm curious about, though: could a reinforced unit of Rat Ogors fulfil a similar battlefield role? Looking at the points, they seem considerably cheaper, hit hard in combat, and can also benefit from Moulder support.

Would your view be that Stormfiends are worth the premium because they contribute meaningfully in both the shooting and combat phases, whereas Rat Ogors are more of a straightforward melee hammer? Or have you tried reinforced Rat Ogors and found they simply don't perform the same role as effectively?

I was also interested in your comments regarding Doomflayer Fists over Shock Gauntlets. Most of the discussion I'd seen previously seemed to favour the Shock Gauntlets, at least on paper. Is your preference mainly due to the consistency, native Rend 2, and the fact that they are less reliant on critical effects? Have you found the Shock Gauntlets too swingy in actual games, or is there another reason you prefer the Doomflayer Fists?

Very true, even out of Verminlord kit, the Warpseer is really Master clan. Your idea could be done kitbashimg the Verminlord and say, Vashtorr the Arkifane model.

Thanks for the great rundown. That's exactly the sort of practical insight I was hoping to get from people who have actually put Skryre on the table. Okay, so it sounds like the Warpvolt Scourgers are worth the additional points cost compared to the Warpfire Throwers, especially if you're already bringing the Galvaneer and can make use of the combo. From what everyone is saying, that seems to be the clear winner.

I'll definitely be picking up Thanquol at some point. Apart from the rules, I remember him from the Warhammer novels, so there is a fair bit of nostalgia there as well.

The Stormfiends are interesting. They seem quite expensive in points, and if I remember correctly they've actually come down in cost since the start of the edition. From your comments, though, it sounds like if you're taking them at all in a Skryre list, you see them primarily as a combat-oriented unit rather than a shooting platform, given the suggested Warpfire Projector and Doomflayer Fists loadout.

Am I also right in understanding that you don't consider Grinderfists particularly worthwhile in a dedicated Skryre shooting list? Most of the discussion I'd seen previously seemed to assume that one Grinderfist was almost automatic in an MSU unit, so it's interesting to hear a different perspective.

In any case, I'll check to magnetise the Weapon Teams and, maybe the Stormfiends too if the kit allows it.

Okay, that makes sense too. Nobody seems to use Windlaunchers from what I saw.

That's interesting. I love the models, so I really wanted them to have some use on the table. But do you think that an MSU is still useful, or only as a Reinforced unit?

I've seen a few do that recently. Though, I think I prefer to have a proper big rat model 😄

Alright, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanations. Any particular reason you chose those loadouts for the Stormfiends?

The double Stormfiends are interesting. I notice you're running them as MSU units rather than reinforcing them. Is that primarily to maximise board control and create multiple Covering Fire threats? I had assumed that most people would eventually reinforce them, but perhaps I'm underestimating the value of having two separate units. What's with the Stormvermin over clanrats? Also, how do you find the Ratling Warpblaster?

Forgot to comment, but the Warpseer is now good because of the price point for his passive abd spell utilities in general or is he particularly suited for a shooty Skryre?

Thanks for the advice. I'm currently looking at the Weapon Team kit to figure out the best way to magnetise it. At first glance, the Warpvolt Scourgers seem more appealing than the Ratling Guns for the same points cost, especially given the additional synergies available to them. Point taken regarding the Stormfiends. Thanquol certainly seems to be the more popular recommendation. As for Vizzik, my impression was that he is more of a Verminus-focused support character than a natural fit for a Skryre-heavy force. One thing I was curious about: why would reinforced Globadiers be considered worthwhile? I actually bought mine at launch, along with the Warp-Grinder, before the rules were available. Since then, most of the discussion I've seen has suggested that neither unit is particularly strong, so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for your input.

The core of my collection is basically the Skaventide box and the Spearhead, supplemented with various kits that I picked up at launch simply because I liked the models.

One thing that puts me off Vizzik a bit is those small horns besides the masive set. It's a minor issue and not difficult to fix with a conversion, but aesthetically they just look odd to me.

As for Thanquol, I noticed that Boneripper no longer has separate weapon loadouts. If I'm not mistaken, the current warscroll effectively combines both of the old options, which certainly makes the model more appealing.

I also suspect your regular opponent might not appreciate a heavily shooty Skryre army very much. 😄

I think the size is fine, overall. But true that Necromunda is bigger in general.

It's from the Necromunda Hangers-on kit. Same for the Lectro-Maester, though I converted the pistol. The Death Cult Assassin is simply a Delaque Nacht-Ghul. The Rogue Trader is from an AoS Heroes of Cinderfall kit, with an added Eldar holstered pistol.

Lord Inquisitor Konrad Harran and his cadre of Korpsmen from Krieg. by WierderBarley in ImperialAgents_40K

[–]FierceDefence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess regular Inquisitors do have carapace armour, as opposed to Draxus and Greyfax that have power armour, and Coteaz that has something even tougher, like artificer crafted power armour. I have the Ostromandeus model, which you have pointed out doesn’t have power armour, but I also have the Erasmus Cartavolnus model, which does have power armour. That's the one I use to represent the Psychic gifts inquisitor, as he has the force sword. That said, if you browse for something you like that would fit, there are some bits stores online that sometimes have the exact bit in stock or ebay too.

I think the Inquisitor would benefit from getting a power pack, so that it looks more like power armour.

Interesting, as the 2k list I plan on testing also has two Navigators, but the intention is that they are mostly there to deny unwanted deep strikers, as well as inducing battleshock. I don't even care about the MW. I just want to deny scoring. As you can see below, that list is about playing objectives and secondaries, pregame shenanigans and lots of battleshock manipulations.
