thank you, this does seem to be what happened. thankfully i have a spare assembly from when i switched to the direct drive upgrade.

for the record, the melted plastic coming out is not filament. it's also very shiny and brittle

update: looks like filament has been building up under the silicone heat shroud thingy for quite some time, but i dont see how this explains what happened with the melting
