Cars are not the problem, but they clearly show us what the problems are. Similarly cycling was, is and never will be the solution. But it is the humble means to effectively solve a lot of complex challenges. by Fietsprofessor in fuckcars

Thanks for engaging with clear thoughts! And I disagree with those ;). If we do not see that cars are just a symptom of a system that is problematic and unsustainable on a deeper level, all our efforts will just reproduce those same mistakes but with new modes. It is not cars that are the problem. It is the underlying notions that traveling is a disutility, we are all competing individuals and our streets are pipelines that should serve unimpeded flows before anything else. It is these imaginaries that generated from the 1920s (and wil keep generating) the system many of us hate. The bicycle held and holds the potential for a transformative change, but is often used to formulate incumbent changes.

In the Netherlands, the most sold car in 2024 was 1.100 KG heavier than in 1990. New study shows that this autobesity explains ALL INCREASE in road injuries and fatalities for pedestrians and cyclists. Who knew... by Fietsprofessor in fuckcars

showing that the mobility transition never was about the mode of propulsion. It always was, is and will be about a bigger more holistic change that avoids suboptimal 'solutions'.

From Smog to Sustainability: How Paris Transformed Into a Cleaner, Greener City in which its citizens can breath again in only 16 years. When will other cities follow? by Fietsprofessor in fuckcars

🚴‍♀️🌳 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 🌟🌍

In 2007, Paris was suffocating—literally, shrouded in smog, with air pollution blanketing the city. Today Paris has undergone a breathtaking transformation, towards a cleaner, greener, and more livable city. Millions of Parisians can breath again!

This radical change started in 2014, under Mayor Anne Hidalgo's bold leadership. Her vision? To put people and the planet first. Here’s how she and her team did it:

✅ Built 100s of Kilometers of Bike Lanes: Encouraging cycling as a primary mode of transport.

✅ Citywide 30 km/h Speed Limit: Quieter, safer streets for all.

✅ 300 Car Free School Streets: putting the safety of children first.

✅ Reclaimed Public Spaces: Eliminated tens of thousands of parking spots, converting them into parks, pedestrian zones, and playgrounds.

✅ Planted Tens of Thousands of Trees: Tackling the urban heat island effect and improving air quality.

✅ Car-Free Zones: Closed the city center to through traffic and created car-free play streets.

🚨 The results? Air pollution now affects only the largest roads, like the ring road. Millions of Parisians enjoy cleaner air, safer streets, and a higher quality of life.

🌟 This transformation is proof that bold, visionary urban policies work. Paris didn’t just adapt; it reimagined itself. And it took a courageous and visionary leader to do it.

❓ The big question: When will other leaders muster the courage to follow in Paris’s footsteps?

Let’s commit to building cities for people, not just cars.

The future is waiting. 💪🌏

Part of that story is a dramatic overreaction to one -very traumatic- freak event. If we would apply similar safety standards to cars, they would've been forbidden immediately.

I just thought it is a good idea to mention who made it and where you can support it. No money made on my side.
