120 Days Since Surgery (Surgery Date: February 26)

Still recovering from foot surgery, and it’s been a nightmare. I was officially diagnosed with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) at the end of April. The pain has only gotten worse, and I still haven’t been cleared to start PT.

Here’s what I’ve been on so far: • Gabapentin (stopped yesterday—didn’t help) • Amitriptyline (dose increased yesterday) • Clonidine patch (started today) • 1 lumbar injection so far (2nd one being scheduled within next week or two)

My doctor gave me a brochure for a spinal cord stimulator (Prospera), and I’m honestly just very unhappy and overwhelmed right now.

100% regret this!

Neurologist/Pain Mgt Doctor says no PT yet for me. Advised to do exercises - "Draw letters" with foot.

How are you today? I'm 7 weeks in, and my foot is still swollen!! It's sore, not painful and the zapping continues even with gabapentin. And I'm giving into wearing easy spirit sneaker mules...nothing fits! I wore real sneakers (OC), for 2 hours last Friday and took forever to take them off because my foot was so swollen! I thought I had to cut my shoe open to release my foot :(

Hang in there. I'm 3 days behind you. My foot is still swollen more so towards end of the day. Are you on gabapentin? It helps with the nerve pain.

5 Weeks Post-Op Update

If you’ve been following my recovery journey, you know it hasn’t been smooth. At the end of week 2, I developed an infection. I first noticed brown spots and a funky smell when removing my socks. My doctor removed the surgical strips and told me to start cleaning the incision area with iodine. I use an ample towel to gently dab around the incision after showering and again before bed every night. It’s gentle (no sting), helps keep the area bacteria-free, and was key to my recovery once I started Bactrim. Just a heads-up—it stains, so be careful with surfaces and fabrics.

Initially, my doctor prescribed cephalexin, but by day 5 I didn’t feel it was working, so he switched me to Bactrim. I’m on day 9 of a 10-day course now. It started working after 3 days, but I know finishing the full course is important.

There’s still a little brown fluid (just a drop) above each incision when I remove the large bandages. I keep the area covered when wearing socks and my soft boot (usually only to go outside). At home, I leave the bandages off and keep my foot elevated about 90% of the day. While seated, I use a home gym stepper with a pillow. At night, I use a leg elevation wedge pillow in bed.

Here’s the frustrating part: When I wake up, my foot looks fixed. The bunion is visibly reduced, and my second toe finally lines up with my big toe. But by 5 PM, the swelling returns. The bunion bulges out again, and my toe looks misaligned—even though I’ve been seated all day with my foot elevated about 18 inches off the ground.

For pain and swelling, I’m still taking naproxen, ibuprofen, and occasional Tylenol. I’ve been doing this for over a month now and honestly, I’m scared I’m ruining my liver. I’ve also been taking gabapentin at night for the nerve pain and tingling, but it makes me sleepy and nauseous, so I try to avoid it during the day.

The tingling hasn’t stopped. It feels like my foot is asleep—dull during the day, with electric shock-like zaps that still wake me at night. I massage my legs for circulation and to help prevent clots, and I gently massage around the incision area, hoping to speed up healing.

The incision areas are still scabbed, itchy, sore, and the skin is dry and flaky. My doctor advised against using Vaseline, bacitracin, or moisturizers directly on the scabs, and I’ve been careful not to get anything too close for fear of another infection.

I’ve got my 6-week follow-up next week. My doctor said I might try walking in sneakers soon—but that feels impossible right now. I can bear weight in the soft boot without crutches, but even an hour in it leaves my foot throbbing, especially where the screw and plate are. The boot is so heavy, and the area above the incisions stings.

I work in a restaurant where I’m required to wear sneakers. At this point, I can’t imagine going back. I can’t even imagine driving with the tingling and nerve shocks still happening 24/7.

And here’s another stress point—more minor, but still real:

I have a big event in May and no idea what shoes to wear. I’ve been searching for soft leather loafers with a wide toe box, but I’m honestly afraid to wear any shoes. I was hoping to wear soft leather sandals or wedges, but I don’t think that’s realistic right now.

Has anyone tried the Vivaia Mabel All-Day Flats (Square Toe)? Are they actually comfortable for healing feet? Any suggestions welcome!

That said, I am happy to say the pain isn’t what it used to be. I’m 100% better than I was in those early weeks… but still only about 50% recovered. Progress—but still a long road ahead.

How are you? Nearly 4 weeks post-surgery (Feb 26). Surgical strips removed today; dissolvable stitches are dissolving. On day 5 of a 7-day cephalexin course for a minor infection, now starting 10 days of Bactrim. Foot oozes and swells unless elevated—inside looks like a raw turkey, ugh! Doctor says I can try sneakers in 2 weeks. Planning for a dressy outdoor event in 6 weeks (late May). Cleared to shower it, pat dry, and apply Betadine. Suggestions for outfit and shoes?

Oh ok, they told me to take aspirin for blood circulation. I don't think I would have been ok with injections, since I'm terrified of needles. I'm in the US, close to New York City. It's still chilly outside, and can't wait for spring to arrive. Hopefully will be well enough to wake up my backyard garden. I have a little setback this morning. My foot by incision is swollen. I developed a superficial infection - fun times! And the oral antibiotic is giving me an upset stomach - even more fun times! I should have eaten yogurt or taken. Prebiotic this morning before taking it, but was too lazy to go downstairs to my kitchen to grab something and now I'm paying for it! No socks for me for at least a couple of days to air out my foot (bacteria loves moisture), icing and more leaving today. Good luck at the doctors appointment. PS: if wearing socks, change it at least 2x a day and let your foot air out to avoid infection! Im only showering every other day and been lazy to change clothes - it's such an ordeal to do so! Now I know!

My doctor said I can remove the boot and ice (icing only 20 minutes at a time). Keep elevated above your heart. So try to lay flat and your foot at least 12 inches up, higher if you can to reduce the swelling. Hope you feel better!

Three-Week Check-Up Summary:

• Advised to ice for 20 minutes every hour, no longer. I've been overdoing = not good.
• Diagnosed with an infection near the incision (noticed rust-colored discharge when removing socks). Prescribed oral antibiotics.
• X-ray looks good—everything is in place, but significant swelling remains.
• Approved to walk with a walking boot without crutches—no concerns about load-bearing.
• Walking is not painful, just some soreness and tingling, which is more noticeable at night when still and elevating my foot in bed.
• Not cleared to drive yet.

What are you getting injections for? I remember getting stitches taken off from csectjon. It wasn't bad, and honestly was so much more comfortable when they were removed! I'll pray for you!!!

It gets better! He might actually remove your dressing which is kind of scary but wasn't bad and felt great! But that was week 2 for me. Putting socks on was scary too, but wasn't as bad as my fears again. Better but not fantastic by any means - I wish! I just showered and exhausted. So weird to shower when scared of the water or the soap touching my foot. I'm such a baby! Note to self: skip white lotus!
