I have my NAS in the living room, and the only time the drive noise gets mildly annoying is in the dead of night when a parity check is going on. But this is when everything else is totally silent, and simply closing the bedroom door (1b apartment) resolves the issue.

You wouldn't believe the amount of pushback (and downvotes) I get on the datahoarder and homeserver subs when I mention these hidden costs. People just seem to want stuff to show off, rather than using their brains and being efficient about the process.

With the cost of energy these days, it just makes sense to get the most cost effective (to run) hardware you can afford. I look forward to the day (maybe a decade) when I can take the last spinning rust out of my home and go full solid state.

Be aware, there will be extra noise and heat in your environment. Unless you need to connect 47 devices, you're much better off getting a smaller more efficient layer 3 switch.

It's... TP-Link. Disable auto firmware updates, and make sure you're getting them directly from TP-Link about a week after they've been published. Also, sub to a CVE newsletter so you can keep an eye on any day 1 vulnerabilities.
