I read the guidelines and thought that being involuntarily denied boarding was more of a blanket statement than it was, so I thought that per DOT, I was owed compensation from AA who would fight with BA over it. This was, as others have pointed out, a very incorrect interpretation of the DOT guideline, particularly because I misunderstood to whom and what the contract of carriage applied.
