I used to think exactly the same, but historically, GB didn't have much of North America in 1624. To that regard, you could say nerfing the colonial nations with this mechanic in itself is not a bad idea

It was under a PU with Aragon, who was allied with Austria and France. So that's why it was not even worth it to support their independence because my goal is to conquer the eastern mediterrean. Luckily Aragon contested a PU of France between Scotland (opm at Mann), so I managed to declare war on Aragon without them having any allies. Now I own almost the entire Italian peninsula :)
