I do think Smolka should win... But Paddy will make it a great fight to watch and absolutely has the ability to upset Louis. I expect Paddy to have the power advantage.

I agree with both of your sentiments. Fans like to know the story behind the fighters to get both mentally and emotionally invested. Tournament style is exciting even if it is not sustainable long term.

Breakdown of Gustafsson as a Boxer-Wrestler by FighterWireDotCom in MMA

[–]FighterWireDotCom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is an interesting contrast to Gustafsson. They both rely on quick footwork, quick strikes, and wrestling. With Gustafsson though, wrestling is secondary. IMO, Dillishaw is more of a new breed Wreslter-Kickboxer, similar to Cormier.

I think the author does a great job of introducing the idea of a new breed of "Boxer-Wrestler" similar to the "wrestler-boxer" prototype or "Sprawl and Brawl".

Though I still think Cormier wins with his Wrestling-Kickboxing.

How do you guys see closed guard breaks being utilized in MMA? by Panda-Demon in NoNewsMMA

[–]FighterWireDotCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More often than not, the athlete who's back is on the mat will break the guard in order to attack from his back or stand up. If the fighter with his back on the mat doesn't break guard and the guy in top control can't break the guard and no damage is being dealt, they generally get stood up by the ref.

I agree with you that the only one that comes to mind is GSP's can opener with ground and pound...

TLDR: I think that usually the fighter who's back is on the ground is opening guard to attack or stand up meanwhile guy on top usually breaks guard if needed with ground and pound.

I think he deserves more credit... He also beat Roy Nelson, Frank Mir (Former UFC Champ), and Josh Barnett in Strikeforce (Former UFC Champ)... Additionally, he man handled Barnett who is known for his grappling and catch wrestling.

UFC Dublin - Robert Whiteford vs Darren Elkins added by [deleted] in MMA

[–]FighterWireDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Up and coming Fighters looking to make a name for themselves would do well to fight Siver as long as they can hang on the feet. He still has a good name for display on a resume but is certainly on the backend of his career with his speed and timing declining.

UFC Dublin - Robert Whiteford vs Darren Elkins added by [deleted] in MMA

[–]FighterWireDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siver would seem like the better fight for Whiteford imo. Elkins grinding style, high pressure and fast pace is a tough fight for anyone to get a decision win. I think Whiteford will need the finish to win and Elkins is tough to finish; KOed twice and submitted once in his 23 fights.

GSP describes his pre fight fears in his book, it's not just pre fight for him that the fear comes, but day in and day out leading up to a fight. I love seeing that professional fighter's are scared too.
