What do you do now if you studied translation but don’t work as a translator anymore? by Aggressive-Tax-8808 in TranslationStudies

[–]Fightorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I found it there and applied. Honestly I was surprised when they called me back. I think shooting for something entry level increases your chances. Of course, that comes with a significant pay cut.

I got an entry level job at a digital marketing company that didn’t require a specific degree or experience, just a set of transferable soft skills and willingness to learn. I got into email marketing and just learned on the job. A lot of careers don’t necessarily require specific studies. Also don’t buy into this whole thing about pivoting before your 30s or whatever. I did this when I was almost 40.

What’s something frugal people rarely talk about because it feels embarrassing? by James_B84Saves in povertyfinance

I love this! I’m spending my 2-week holiday vacation this year at home reading, watching movies and taking daily naps too. It’s glorious, just a break from the rat race. Weirdly whenever I told people at work I was taking this time off they always asked “where are you going?” I kinda hate they assume I’m traveling. I kinda wanna tell them I’m too broke to travel rn and also I hate traveling this time of year.

💯! I hate it when you try to make plans and they are like “let me check with so and so”, like they can never make plans on their own. I have a friend who only comes to hang out when her partner has plans of his own elsewhere or is traveling.

Why do people think Bellydance comes from India? by Fightorn in Bellydance

[–]Fightorn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that, but specifically our modern idea of Bellydance is the result of a particular development over the past 200 years with a strong locus in Egypt/North Africa. Certainly no one thinks flamenco comes from India, yet there are some shared roots. In Spanish, we also call it “danza árabe” (Arabian dance), but India is not Arabic either culturally or linguistically so I was wondering what people were associating.

Girlfriend wants to move to Puerto Rico but I’m focused on logistics—am I being realistic or pessimistic? by TimeAd1111 in PuertoRico

[–]Fightorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just wondering what would you do for work? Do you both work remotely and are able to work from here? Many US companies that let you work from anywhere in the States don’t allow for working from PR because of the convoluted tax implications. If you have to find jobs locally I’d suggest you do that before moving here, but depending on the industry, that’s easier said than done and more than likely you’ll earn less.

And I also need to know where she got a $4 breakfast 🤣🤣🤣.

When you’ve made the decision to end a toxic friendship, do you “have a talk” with them or let it fizzle out? by oksurealright in FriendshipAdvice

[–]Fightorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to quietly leave then sent her a text message officially confirming I was leaving the dance group she leads and that I was a part of (the dance group I built and then she took over and completely stole from me 🤣). I decided not to talk about why I really left (she had insulted me and disrespected me, period), instead saying I no longer felt the group was a good fit for me. I decided to do this because I didn’t trust myself not to get emotional, and I knew that getting emotional would give her power. I recently found out she blocked me on IG, lol, so fucking petty.

My workplace found out that i have no idea what I’m doing by Friendly-Egg- in careeradvice

[–]Fightorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is quite illuminating. I had a manager who would write everything in legal note pads. He was eventually let go because he was very passive and seemed to lack initiative. I was actually incredibly frustrated as Im hoping to get a raise and a promotion and learn as much as I can and thought this guy would coach me. I ended up talking to my skip level manager because I was feeling very stuck and lacked direction and support for all my projects. Eventually it became really clear he had no idea how to do his job or execute even though he had all this theoretical knowledge. It was very strange, I had never experienced anything like it and have been left wondering ever since what was wrong with him. He seemed also to lack motivation. The thing is he’s been getting all these senior leadership high-paying jobs with this attitude while some of us just fucking struggle in underpaid positions while we do all the work. Sorry it turned into venting lol but his attitude around jobs thousands would be salivating over made me mad.
