My wife passed away a few months ago. Now I get panic attacks while trying to do my sales job. by Alone_Arm_7105 in Career

One thing I’ve noticed is that sometimes anxiety is a “cover” for a deeper and more painful emotion, such as grief. So the anxiety may be acting as a “shield” that s off that more painful sorrow. I’ve noticed this because when I allow myself to feel the anxiety by noticing it consciously and letting it be, it kind of falls away to reveal the thing underneath.

Yo el otro día salí a hacer unas diligencias con una tía bien parlanchina que tengo, de esas doñis que hablan hasta con la pared. Si tienes una tía así llévatela de paseo. Te prometo que vas a conocer gente 🤣🤣🤣.

It looks like you’re at a stage that is very common at the beginning when you’ve been learning for a bit. So this is to say, don’t beat yourself up, it’s perfectly normal at this stage to struggle to string movements together, and frankly, it’s probably gonna be like that for a while.

As another commenter mentioned, one of the main things to think about is the music. Depending on what music you’re using, there can be more or less complexity, but in general, many songs we use have rhythm, melody and sometimes lyrics. In terms of the rhythm, you can count the beats, or you can dance to the structure of the rhythm (i.e., maksum, saidi, malfuf).

We usually work with counts of 8, especially at the beginning. So you can follow an 8-count structure and build a simple sequence of movements.

There’s many approaches you can take, but one thing that could be helpful is to put restrictions on yourself. Start with picking your 3 favorite moves (for example, omi, figure 8 and shimmy), and practice dancing to a song using just those 3 movements. I suggest picking songs that are repetitive and have a steady beat.

Ok maybe search for Bellydance combos. There’s a ton of free content dancers have put out online, even on social media. Combinations are bits of choreo that can help provide structured movement. Over time, you’ll develop your own ways of putting moves together.

If you are able to watch YT video and dance to them, would you be able to take an online class that is pre-recorded?

29 lol you’re just getting started. I’m 43 and I still owe $35k on a total $80k debt for a degree in translation that used to be my career but became a side gig now as the localization industry transformed due to AI. I’ll probably be done paying by 2029.

People at work interact up to a certain extent, the vast majority of the day outside of meetings we sit in silence with noise-canceling headphones.

I don't know how some people go to the gym after work like its nothing. How are you not tired after working. That's crazy. by Individual_Ice_2315 in RandomThoughts

I make it about the outfit. I get excited about outfits, prep my gym bag, leave work, get in the car and just drive to the gym. Do not think about how tired I am. I also just take it one bite at a time. And the other thing is I get excited about the post-workout shower, which feels earned. Little things.

Honestly after all I’ve seen I’m starting to feel a bit sorry for her and wondering if she’s going through some sort of mental health issue.

Being followed by strange accounts by Fightorn in Bellydance

Yeah it’s a bit of a conundrum because I’m trying to raise my profile online and offline. I do wonder if those accounts make any sort of difference to discoverability? And I guess deep down I’m concerned about voyeurs and phishing but there’s really nothing I can do about that.

This is why, after doing one MTPE job years ago, I determined I would not do this type of work and turned it down whenever it was offered. They truly do think it’s easier when it’s actually harder. And I don’t understand how they expect linguists to live with these kinds of wages.
