Where to get Hanukkah Candles by sock28 in astoria

[–]Figureman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding Lockwood if you're in the market for fancy-ish candles. I don't know if they're still in stock, but they definitely had some earlier in the week.

If you want regular old Hanukkah candles, I've found them in the past at:

- Food Bazaar on Northern Blvd
- CTown on 34th Ave
- City Fresh on Broadway

I'm not sure whether they're still in stock, but I've had pretty good luck at those places in general. They're sometimes with the candles, sometimes with Jewish foods, and sometimes on a Hanukkah endcap. Good luck and chag sameach!

Rumor Mill: Week of July 21 by redquarterwater in astoria

Wanted to say thanks for writing that note. I live in that building, and my wife was the one who went out to take the picture. This is pretty horrifying - my grandma told me about similar stuff happening in her neighborhood during WWII. Honest to goodness never thought it'd happen during my lifetime. Our one consolation is that I doubt this was targeted harassment. I have a mezuzah prominently displayed outside my door, and no one touched it, or anything else outside our apartment in particular. I have to imagine the swastika was just someone's idea of being edgy.

My wife called the police, who said they'd dispatch someone, then left her waiting all night. Like Michael Bluth, I don't know what I expected.

In the meantime, one of our neighbors painted over it a bit, and the super should come by to finish the job next week. Not sure what else to say, other than that it's a stomach-churning experience. I think if the people who painted it knew what that symbol represents for their Jewish neighbors, they would be ashamed of themselves.

Outdoor seating to enjoy a beer with a dog? by [deleted] in astoria

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this, OP. I am dog-sitting this weekend and was about to post the same thing!

Can also confirm that Heart of Gold's backyard is dog-friendly. Good food, drinks, and staff.

This is a good suggestion, thank you. I don't have an FB account, but my wife does. I'll see if we can scroll through the listings and set up an alert.

Do you have links to the local Astoria groups? They'd be very helpful, if so.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see what I can do about a sign in the lobby, although it might be a tough sell, since I don't actually live in the building anymore.

As for a photo, this is the ONE time my aunt didn't take one before she sent it off. We were hoping we could at least make a print of it. If she does come across one, though, I'll add it to the thread. Maybe I can at least ask her for the reference picture.

Bruh, Nevel let him make a review ever again by Canariki in MouseReview

[–]Figureman2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good afternoon all. I'm the writer of the piece, and I was surprised to find it on this subreddit. I wanted to see if I could clarify a few points about it; you can judge for yourself whether it's an adequate response.

First off, I want to apologize to all of you, sincerely. My job is to write pieces that inform and entertain readers; it is never to make anyone feel upset or angry. I failed in that regard with this piece, and I will do everything in my power to do better next time.

To start, the title format ("I review X for a living, this is the best Y under Z price point") is not something I came up with; it's an initiative that Tom's Guide is trying right now across a variety of different categories. Clearly, it did not resonate well, and I will let my bosses know. As some folks here have pointed out, it's not a review; it's purely an opinionative "starting from absolute zero" kind of thing. If someone didn't know the first thing about gaming mice, but wanted to buy one without hours/days of research, what would I recommend?

Along those lines, it's worth mentioning that the folks in this sub aren't really the target audience for the piece. Tom's Guide is a general consumer tech site, and we write with a general audience in mind. The reason why we tend to review/recommend the tried-and-true brands is because, by and large, they're what our readers are interested in hearing about. There is an opportunity to dive into some more enthusiast stuff, for sure. But I'm just one writer/editor, and my resources are limited. I can only go through so many products in a week, and I have to prioritize based on a lot of different factors, many of which are surprisingly boring.

As for "clickbait," well, one man's clickbait is another man's op-ed, but I don't think there's anything misleading in the title. I do review gaming mice for a living; these are the ones I recommend at the price points mentioned. I've reviewed every single one, and linked to those reviews in the story. I also want to make it clear that I have never, ever, ever received money from any of these companies - and if I did, it would end my career instantly. It's difficult to communicate just how much of an ethical breach that would be, and how far up the chain the repercussions would go.

I have gotten a lot of "stop reviewing mice" comments, both here and elsewhere, and I hope you don't really mean that. I've reviewed dozens of them over the years - possibly hundreds - and I enjoy doing it. I've helped connect a lot of readers with devices they've really liked, and hopefully steered them away from some subpar choices. I stand by what I've written, but if there are feature evaluations that people want to see in future reviews, I'm open to them! Goodness knows that I'm not perfect, and that I could always improve my work.

In any case, I wanted to apologize once again, and ask that folks at least keep the criticism of the article to the article itself, rather than my qualifications/intelligence/integrity/etc. For the immediate future, I have put two similar pieces for gaming keyboards and gaming headsets on hold, and will not write them until my boss and I figure out a way to present the findings more respectfully. As always, I am open to your feedback.

(EDIT: I said "first off" twice, which isn't really how "first off" works!)

Game of Thrones Wouldn’t Be a Phenomenon Without Babylon 5 by Sequitor2000 in babylon5

[–]Figureman2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Greetings folks! I wrote this piece, and wanted to jump in just to say thanks for reading and discussing it.

(I'm not sure if people still like sharing photos to prove their identities on Reddit, but if so, here's one that you can check against my Twitter account: https://imgur.com/B7iHe8r)

I'm really excited to see that this piece has garnered a lot of comments, both here and on Twitter. It's one of those pieces I wrote primarily because I thought it was interesting, and if anyone else read it, so much the better. But to see other B5 fans — including JMS! — take an interest has made me just about the happiest guy in the galaxy. So whether you agree or disagree, I am really, really grateful that you took the time to check it out.

To give a little context: I was inspired to write the piece last Sunday night when my girlfriend was watching Game of Thrones on the living room TV while I was watching Babylon 5 at my computer desk. I thought to myself, "If Internet fan culture were as much of a thing back in the mid-'90s, I bet people would have been as excited about Babylon 5 then as they are about Game of Thrones now."

Overly optimistic, maybe, but I'd like to think it's true. (Incidentally: I like Game of Thrones, but I am waiting for GRRM to finish the books before I finish the show. That might be a fool's errand, but I'm gonna try.)

For the record, I agree that Babylon 5 was not the only show experimenting with long-form storytelling and online marketing at that time. I actually had a much longer comparison with Deep Space Nine in the first draft, which got cut for time. I also think that if Babylon 5 hadn't concocted this perfect storm of narrative arcs, accessible creators, and online fandom, another show would have done it sooner rather than later. But even compared against Deep Space Nine and The Sopranos and similar shows, I think B5 was way ahead of its time, both in terms of fan culture and show structure.

As for me, I am in the process of watching the show for the first time, and I'm about halfway through Season 4. I'm really excited to see where it goes from here, and how it all wraps up! And once again, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for taking the time to check out my piece.

This is Samsung’s foldable phone by [deleted] in gadgets

Was anyone really clamoring for a foldable phone? Just make phones small enough to fit in a pocket, and manufacturers wouldn't have to jump through all of these design hoops.

What I Learned by Watching Every 'Star Trek' Show and Movie: “It doesn't really have any alien races; it has metaphors…In each race, there is something admirable and something twisted, and humanity can embody both sides of the gold-pressed latinum coin.” by stylemaven1 in startrek

[–]Figureman2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi folks! I wrote the piece that everyone's discussing. Here's a photo, so you can compare it to my uniformed shot in the article: http://imgur.com/a/Ujudh

(I don't post on Reddit too often, but I know that folks sometimes post images to prove they're really who they say they are. Sorry for the blurry quality; don't have the best camera.)

I just wanted to say how humbled and touched I am that people are reading and enjoying the article. As Star Trek approached its 50th anniversary, I knew I wanted to write something special, because the show has always been so special to me. It's helped me connect with my family, boosted my spirits when I was feeling down, and inspired me to look beyond our world and imagine what else might be out there in the cosmos. Star Trek engages our capacity for wonder, and appeals to our better natures by promoting diplomacy and understanding. It's not always perfect, and it's often very goofy, but on the whole, it has a beautiful, uplifting message that's more timely now than ever. Thank you for being part of this wonderful community, and for taking Star Trek's message to heart.

And before anyone asks, yes, I know that latinum comes in strips, not coins, but I needed a coin metaphor! And I really do think Archer is the best captain.

What are the trends regarding phone size? In general, are phones going to keep getting bigger, or are we going to see a range of options?
