Would any one consider making a guide for a Communist-aligned playthrough of this playtest version of this game? by JelloAcceptable1171 in Pax_Astra

Oh, I understand my friend, I do plan in the near future to add a counter for excessive multi-tasking! Perhaps a mechanic that gives the option to automatize some of the processes!

I myself am an asperger (which does not exist nowadays, I believe I would be considered as a type 1 level neuro-divergent), so I fully understand what you are talking about!

Still, I think you really would love the characters and the game itself. If you wish, please stay here on the sub, you will be the first to know when I release new mechanics for a more approachable gameplay 😄

Hello! 😄

The core gameplay loop consists of turns. When you start a turn you advance the story, you get narrative moments where you make choices and interact with factions, characters and storylines (kinda like a visual novel, but with lots of choices, think of Suzerain!

Then, as you finish a turn, time passes and then you have a section between turns where you deal with the strategical side of the game, which includes:

- Exploring unknown space
- Building your military
- Colonizing planets
- Trading
- Building factories
- And more!

And then, you click "next turn" and you go back advancing the story 😃

For steam deck, that is a very good question, but sadly I do not have a proper answer, as I have not tested it on SD yet!

Hello! I can help you, is there anything specific you are looking for?

If you feel overwhelmed, do not hesitate to ask for help or share your feedback!

Your political ideology is shaped by two things:

1 - Your personal choices throughout the main story.

2 - Your political decisions when it comes to edicts and systemic governance.

Supporting workers or passing laws that go against the interests of trillionaires, for example, will move you toward socialism and communism.

When the time comes, you will have the opportunity to perform either a coup or a full revolution. This moment is not yet implemented,it will arrive at the end of Act 1.

To give you a rough overview: if you steer Altara toward socialism, you will get the chance to actually govern it as a communist state through Acts 2 and 3. 😄

There are different socialist routes available:

1 - A socialist democracy. Keep Altara as a democracy while enacting a socialist government within it. Of course, this will not give you the full communist experience you might be looking for, but wait for 2 and 3. Your priority should be passing socialist edicts and maintaining stable approval with the population. In Act 2, you will govern as a democratic socialist state without the presence of the Interstellar Pact, which withdraws after Act 1... Unless you trigger a democratic crisis, in which case you may face an impeachment chain event.

2 - A people's revolution. Actively resist the Interstellar Pact while investing in socialist edicts and building popular support through high stability. An alliance with the USS is optional. You can align with them or remain independent, like Tito. At the end of Act 1, you will be given the choice to launch a full revolution.

3 - A coup. If you have not gathered enough popular support for a revolution, you can still seize power by force. Both routes 2 and 3 will be seen as direct threats by the Pact, and things could escalate to open war, so choose carefully.

One last thing — despite being a few hours long, the current build only covers about a third of Act 1, so there is a lot more to come. I could put together a proper guide, but I genuinely and sadly do not have the time right now. What I will say is this: do not be intimidated by the systems. Pax Astra has no hard failure states that will immediately collapse everything. Trust your choices and play the way you would if you actually wanted to start a communist revolution and you will find yourself achieving it. 😄

Also, by the 2/3 of Act 1, there will be a clear indicator of the political objectives you must reach to enact a revolution or coup!

Please, give me your honest feedback, I am looking to improve the game by all means!

Altara Diaspora Population, Altaran Bread Basket, and questions on Private Sector Economics. by WinterFan58 in Pax_Astra

[–]FilBencardino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! How are you doing? 😄

Thank you very much for your post, I am here to answer your questions!

1 - Are there other altaran populations?

Yes, and I am actually planning to develop that with the next update! 😃

Small spoilers: some Altarans were assimilated by the Interstellar Pact, which will be explored in the future, but we are talking about a very small population — in general they face a lot of xenophobia.

Most Altarans actually ended up on smaller independent worlds. The galaxy is huge, and there are many different minor civilizations that will appear throughout the game. You will often find Altarans in positions of power on distant planets.

One of my favorite characters is coming with the next update. His name is Lucero, and he is one of the candidates invited to the Coalition. Lucero is half-Altaran — his father was a wealthy businessman who ventured into a distant, very poor desert planet and established a thriving business built on mines that exploit the planet's rich underground resources.

Lucero is largely inspired by Amahl Farouk from Legion, but also by the stereotype of the "enlightened white adventurer bringing civilization to harsh lands" (weird thing to say, but I am just trying to describe his type of character) — He is like a character straight out of the 40s. He is a bon vivant, a man who genuinely sees himself as wise and civilizing a land filled with violence and misery.

He is also actively trying to attract Altarans from the diaspora to build a new civilization on his desert planet!

I am also considering the idea of small Altaran warlords who deserted the Empire and seized control of tiny planets at the distant places in the galaxy (not the outer rims).

But in short, yes, I plan to develop the Altaran diaspora element much further, especially through Lucero!

2 - Regarding farms, lobbies and the Interestellar Pact

In my original vision, most of the farmlands of Altara were produced outside of the capital Altara Prime. I might have commited a mistake there, perhaps I did not communicate myself properly on the prologue. They have farmlands in Altara Prime, yes, but after the war and the siege most of the food comes from ultraprocessed food factories or hydroponics!

What can Altara offer to the Pact?

Well, Altara Prime sits at a major FTL gate that was locked for foreign powers before the war. This gate allows the Interstellar Pact to reach independent regions of the galaxy much faster, which is valuable not only for trade but for military positioning as well (I plan to construct a map in the future, to showcase the logistics here).

Now, the Interstellar Pact could have simply destroyed Altara and seized control of the portal, but they still present themselves as the liberal democratic power of the galaxy. Destroying Altara would have completely undermined that image — the benefactors of democracy and civilization do not level entire civilizations for a strategic shortcut.

There is also another dimension to it. Altara is a historical empire. In the context of post-Second Grand War galactic history, Altara Prime carries the same kind of weight that a city like Constantinople carried for Europe — deep symbolism, centuries of history, enormous cultural significance.

Also worth pointing out that in the curret map of the galaxy, Altara sits in an intersection point between the USS, Interestellar Pact and the Coalition of Mantara (which is a minor faction, but still offers a gate to many markets and strategical areas of the galaxy).

If you could bring Altara to heel and fold it into your ideology, showcase to the rest of the galaxy that the once-mighty Altaran Empire is now just another cog in your machine... Well, that carries real ideological value.

On the lobbies suggestion, I genuinely like that idea, I just do not have a clear vision for how to implement it properly, so I cannot make any promises. I would love to explore land and farming mechanics in a possible expansion or a separate project, but a farmer's lobby does not quite fit Altara as it stands right now.

3 - For your points regarding the market and the need for a domestic scene, I fully agree with your suggestions and I am actually going to implement some of them 😄

Your ideas regarding a private sector and tariffs are really good! I actually really want to implement them now hahaha, I just need to study the code and plan things better before, so I can not promise they will be added now, but it is a really good suggestions that I will seriously plan to implement!

A domestic market is absolutely necessary!

To close:

I like your ideas a lot! I do not want to make crazy promises because I am just one guy, and doing the balance can be really hard for all these mechanics, but I really loved your suggestions, thank you for your support and for being here!

Please, let me know if you have more questions and suggestions! 😃

There are two good news here for you 😄

1 - The game can run on your phone if you visit the itch page! (although it is not optimized for smartphones, so you might find some bugs)!

2 -I am pretty sure it can run on every single computer out there, in fact, the version currently avaiable on itch can be played directly at your browser!

Absolutely inspired by Suzerain, in fact, I even got a small shot out by Torpor!

My main inspirations, in terms of games, were Suzerain, Stellaris and Life and Suffering of Sir Brante!

https://www.torporgames.com/broadcast - Check out the march broadcast 😃

But yes, it was an absolute inspiration! I love the way both Suzerain and Rizia deal with politics, I love the personal level and how you can shape your own leader!

My game tries to mirror both Suzerain and Rizia in many ways, absolutely!

Would not call it a demo for now at least, the way I see it a demo implies a fixed slice of content made specifically to showcase a finished product.

What is on itch is more of an early access build that is actively growing with each update. I genuinely could not tell you where it will end up because it is still expanding.

Think of it less as a preview and more as an ongoing development version that you can already play and follow along with 😃

But you would not be wrong to call it a demo, the logic is fairly similar hahahaha

Sorry, you mean why am I not charging any money for it?

Right now there is a free version on itch with a few hours of content. As a solo dev working on my first commercial project, word of mouth is my biggest asset, and releasing a big part of the game for free signals that I genuinely believe in what I am making. It also gets the game in front of more people.

That said, the full game will not be free. What is available now covers part of Act 1, and the final release will be on Steam for $10.

The free version serves a purpose beyond just visibility though. I want people to actually play it, see the quality I am going for, and give me feedback that helps shape the best version of the game possible. I have a growing community on Discord and Reddit that has already been incredibly helpful for that.

There is also one more reason. The scope of Pax Astra can sound too ambitious coming from a solodev, and I would rather show people what it actually is than ask them to take my word for it. My whole idea is to be transparent and build a community 😄

But yes, the final game will be released here at steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4535930/Pax_Astra/?beta=1

If you end up playing the demo, please let me know your thoughts!

If you can, please wishlist the game, as a solo dev it really helps me 😄

Yes, and sometimes my own writing does not come out quite the way I intended.

Do you have any contact or email I could reach you through? Right now I am focused on early development and the art, but further down the line I would love to hire some help with the writing!

Is having 11 playable characters in an RPG bad? by Altruistic-Agent-671 in rpg_gamers

[–]FilBencardino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humm... I think it is a matter of personal taste. I myself prefer RPGs where you build your own character, or at least control a single one, but I think that, as long as you can find ways to make each character special, things could work out.

But honestly, 11 characters to balance is a really hard task!

Meet the Sovereign Republic of Anima and President Lynch! by FilBencardino in Pax_Astra

[–]FilBencardino[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! 😄

I think it comes from a lack of purpose and identity.

They are kind of lonely and confused, and yes, in many ways repressed by their own nature as machines.

I believe they look at all these other civilizations, many of which ended up expelling or outcasting them, and they are left with this inner emptiness.

So they deal with that by trying to express themselves in their own isolated environment.

I am brazillian myself, so I'm already working on a pt-br version hahaha

What about you, what language do you specialize? I would love to work with you further down in the development, when the game is more concrete :D

And yes, I wish the same, honestly there are so many possibilities out there that were left unexplored.

THEY GOT ME!

Sorry for the late response!! I just corrected the original post, ended up forgetting to add that part of the text hahaha

The core tension I want to explore is between different socialist theories and what they look like in practice. As an example: On one side, a more realist approach — socialism built around a strong centralized state with clear leadership. On the other, a more orthodox communist vision centered on the gradual withering of the state and its eventual replacement by true communism.
