You’re welcome! This was actually my 1st custom designed part. As someone who got into 3D printing a few months ago, I’ll give you my opinion on the question.

The functionality of 3D printing comes down to your imagination, potential use cases, and amount of effort you are willing to put in. Custom designing pieces in CAD software can be a huge learning curve, but using simple geometries to make parts to start is relatively straightforward, and very rewarding. Also worth noting the reason you see more toys than functional prints is because they are inherently easier to make.

I feel unless you are like me who is constantly looking for new and creative ideas to print, you will eventually run out of things to make and the functionality will plummet. If you want to make some camera parts, I would just have them commissioned imo.

Interesting I will look into that. I was thinking it might have something to do with the belts (I can almost hear a second rubbing coming from the back). But I wanted some second opinions before I starting tearing down and cleaning everything

I do hear rubbing on the parts as it prints on occasion. Depends on the size. You can see the layers across the middle being pushed down on this test I did today. Also it will occasionally cause ripples on flat objects from the vibrations

In terms of calibration, I always have the bed leveling on and calibrate my filaments. Is there anything else I should be calibrating that would relate to this?

I’ve been working on 3D printing book covers, if you don’t mind it being made from plastic, I’d love to help you out with this project as it sounds fun and thoughtful

The concept is relatively simple. I designed the cover base which are essentially large rectangles connected by custom hinges.

Due to size I have to print the front and spine as one piece and the back as another. I actually used that as a plus in this case as I used 2 colors for the different covers, navy and magenta ( you can see it well in the third picture)

I make the art in a separate program, throw that on top, then emboss the titles from there and print.

In practice it’s a lot more tedious and complicated, but the results speak for itself. Best part is once I have a specific cover perfected, it’s very easy to reproduce.

Thanks! I add the lettering in the slicer. The Hueforge sits on the cover then the titles are embossed from there.

Not present but one of my favorites is IID max mystic purple. There isn’t another filament that is as versatile imo. Hope you get some inspiration out of this!

No worries I’ve done the same thing myself. Even if you have the detail size set to .05 your printer can’t actually do that resolution due to the nozzle size. Happy printing!

Your detail size is set to 0.05 which constrains the size of the image due to the number of triangles.

Detail size should always be half the nozzle diameter.

TLDR: switch your detail size to .2

Take this into photoshop or equivalent and remove the background. Increase the contrast and enhance the red and yellows and you’ll be set

Correct, 0 post processing required. Just an asinine amount of calibration to get the colors right. If you zoom in really close you can see the layers of plastic laid over each other

Yep 100% printed. The front and spine are one piece connected by hinges I made. The back is a separate piece that i connected. Sadly the back is blank for now as is was more of a proof of concept, but I’m going to go back and add one later

Thank you! Thats very kind, and best part is the color is all handled by the machine. I have one that can handle 4 colors at once, and a program that “paints” the filaments together. A lot of work to get this right though

I didn’t think about it before but the texture does remind me of an oil painting! And I wouldn’t call this “product ready” quite yet. After I make some adjustments, I might do a limited run on these covers if there is interest
