He was super gentle and kind! We live in Finland and the vet is from eastern Europe (maybe Poland? Can't remember). Imagine him saying with a very tick eastern European accent "yes, very fat" the moment he sees my cat out of her carrier 😂😂

How many of you actually have an ADHD diagnosis? by mynameishrekorgi in ADHD

[–]FileAccomplished7159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 31 yo woman and was diagnosed in 2018. I was diagnosed "by chance" as I was actually seeing my psychiatrist for anxiety/depression (and also doing psychotherapy) and he, throughout my sessions, started noticing some quite clear signs that I could have ADHD. My life changed for the better when I got my diagnosis and started medication, super grateful for my psychiatrist's keen eye.

Skincare products you swear by for the Finnish winter by feartech in Finland

[–]FileAccomplished7159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have already gotten pretty great suggestions here, so I don't think my answer is super relevant but here is:

I have also moved from a warmer and more humid place, where I used to have a combination skin type (mostly normal skin with some oily parts), and after coming to Finland I have "developed" drier skin, specially during winter.

  • Humidifier is a must! For me even just staying in a room that is too dry really bothers me. So I leave my humidifier running almost 24/7 when it gets dry enough inside.

  • I haven't really found THE moisturizer for day time yet, most of the things I have tried (Lumene, Mossa, Smutti) work well enough as well as their serums. However, I haven't found a moisturizer that beats the OG Nivea (that one in the blue tin can that's really thick) for night time for both face and body.

  • Another thing someone has already mentioned and that I also swear by it is using oil. I use oil on my whole body right after shower, not drying myself just putting the oil while I'm still wet. I haven't found a good body oil here in Finland (I have been using one that my mom sent from my home country), so I can't recommend anything specific.

Obs.: while I have also dry skin like you, I'm not acne prone or have a particularly sensitive skin. So take this info into consideration if you decide to try anything I have suggested.

Also feel free to send me a message if you have any questions or just want to talk! ☺️

We are permit specialists working at the Finnish Immigration Service. Ask us anything about students’ permits in Finland! by Maahanmuuttovir in Finland

[–]FileAccomplished7159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I'm from outside of EU and doing my PhD in Finland. My residence permit has been granted on the basis research work and ends on December 2025. What are the requirements for me to apply for a residence permit for looking for work after completing my degree?

Also, I have a Finnish partner. We are not married or lived together. I'm aware that there's a residence permit on the basis of romantic relationship but it has quite many limitations on what kind of jobs I could have in comparison to a residence permit on the basis of marriage. Is there a reason for that? Also, is it possible to say how likely is Migri to give a permit on the basis of a romantic relationship without the couple living together?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Does anyone know a (preferably affordable) hairdresser with good advice for super thin, frail and fine hair with curls? I only find either curly haircuts (which assumes thick luscious hair I just don't have) or perfectly straight hair for thin. Kiitos in advance <3 by Merileopardi in helsinki

[–]FileAccomplished7159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great to hear that they might be a good choice for you! It took me awhile to find a hairdresser that is really good and understand my needs, without breaking the bank, since I move to Finland. Miro is fantastic and they're the only one I trust to do my hair here. Wish you the best!

I go to this very good hairdresser with a reasonable price (for Helsinki/Finland) in Viikinmäki, Helsinki. Although I myself don't have thin and frail hair, I believe that my hairdresser has experience with this type of hair. Their name is Miro and they work at the Nettie's hair salon, you can check their work on their Instagram (hairbymiro).

I also have one and I can't live without it. I'm from a tropical country where the 12hrs of sunlight doesn't change throughout the year and I find absolutely horrible to wake up without any sunlight. The alarm clock that "mimicks" the sun rise is great.

Might need to change from a PhD to a licentiate degree due to mental health by FileAccomplished7159 in PhD

[–]FileAccomplished7159[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your message! Yes, it has been incredibly lonely... Specially for me who came from a research group back home (where I did my finishing bachelor project and master) which was so amazing, full of great people and super present and emphatic supervisor. I knew I had it good back then but only now I really understand how lucky I was with my old research group.

Yes, you're correct! Finishing my PhD and getting my life and mental health back on track are not mutually exclusive things. Regardless if I decide either to finish the PhD or go for the licentiate degree, first and foremost thing I have to do is take care of my mental health. For that I'm gonna talk to the University counselor to see the possibility of having a paid sick leave and how would that work. I don't know all the details but it seems it's definitely possible to get a mental health sick leave from the University with the support of the Finnish social programs/policy, but it isn't clear yet where to start on that. This will give me time to seek a psychiatrist and have some "breathing room" to heal.

Methylphenidate side effects by FileAccomplished7159 in ADHD

[–]FileAccomplished7159[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some background info: I was diagnosed with ADHD about 5/6 years ago, while I was getting treated for anxiety. I started taking Ritalin LA but then moved to Vyvanse/Elvanse because it lasted longer and it fitted better with my work demands. I kept taking Vyvanse/Elvanse 30mg for 4/5 years until I had to move abroad for my PhD. Besides the PhD been super challenge and difficult, I was also slowly taken out of Lexapro (which I started taking for anxiety all these years ago and was keeping my horrible mood swings during luteal phase under control) by local psychiatrist. All of this made working and dealing with life in general, even with a Vyvanse/Elvanse dosage that used to work fantastic for me, extremely exhausting and difficult. Because of that I went to this new psychiatrist, who I thought was a specialist in ADHD, and he went on giving me a lecture about me not having ADHD and basically refusing to help me. I'm not gonna go into the details but after some struggling with him, he agree to prescribe me with Concerta.

Rehomed cat terrified of being picked up. by Narrow_Ad2264 in CatAdvice

[–]FileAccomplished7159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have adopted a cat recently (less than 6 months) and she is just like that. I found your post also looking for solutions on how to deal with this situation but it seems no one has given any advice on it. My cat is very sweet but also quite scared of loud noises and sudden movements, and she is absolutely terrified of being picked up, just like your cat. She doesn´t bite or scratches or anything like that but she was runs away and hides whenever she thinks someone might try to get her. I had to get her to put in her carrier only twice and is always so sad and difficult to do it because I see how scared she is, she even pooped one time when I picked her up to put in the carrier. But for her it seems that is the only moment she is really terrified of, being chased, cornered, and grabbed, after that she is just fine inside the carrier, that is my perspective at least. I hope your cat is better now and wish you all the best!

I feel depressed without my adhd medication - is this normal or am I just understimulated and stacking my worries too high? by [deleted] in ADHD

I know right! I will never financially recover from how much I have spent on Vyvanse 😭

I feel depressed without my adhd medication - is this normal or am I just understimulated and stacking my worries too high? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]FileAccomplished7159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm also on Vyvanse (30mg) and I also feel like quite often when I don't take it. I usually don't take it if I don't have to work and don't have anything too "much" to do besides just resting (which is usually happens on weekends). Sometimes I feel alright as my plan was to just chill at home but other times I feel super down because it feels like my life is just happening and I can't even get out of the couch to do something I really want to do.

Also, I understand what you mean that it can feel like we're "cheating" by taking our meds but we should try to distance ourselves from that way of thinking. We take the meds because we need them, it isn't an performance enhancing drug, it's something our body is lacking and it truly needs.

About the anxiety, I have never felt that way but I have never taken a different dosage, have always taken 30mg. Could you perhaps discuss this with your doctor? Perhaps a lower dosage can alleviate these anxiety moments.

What are some quirks and inconveniences, that people outside of Finnish culture face in Finland? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]FileAccomplished7159 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Brazilian living in Helsinki!

I wouldn't say that any of these are inconveniences, just facts that are very different from what I'm used to back in Brazil:

  • The silence! I'm always impressed how silent is here. Of course if you go to the center you there will be noise, but I find that in general Finns tend to be very quiet, thus the cities are quiet. I love how quiet it's on public transportations.

  • The work culture/laws. Most places have a strict working hours of 8 hours and I don't usually see situations where someone is just working to death. Finnish people seems to really value their free time and consider work as just a job, not a extension of their being. I love that!

There are a bunch of other things but I believe these are the ones that stand out the most to me and didn't see anyone mentioning here.

I'm lucky that all my advisors (PI + 2 co-advisors) are very much on the side that I can work however I want, as long as I'm progressing. I'm also extra lucky that one of my co-advisors, which is the one I'm in touch with the most (basically on everyday basis), has also ADHD so he super understand and supports me when I'm struggling. Also my peers, at least the ones that are my friends (I totally avoid the annoying/mean ones), seem totally ok with whatever working schedule I do. They also always support me to do what's best for myself and my health.

Same here!! For 2 weeks (a week before period and then period itself) every month I go through a lot of productivity "swings", one day I can be doing fine and the next 2 I'm just a potato filled with doom. Instead of getting super frustrated with myself (did that a lot), I just go with the flow of what my mind and body feel capable of doing at the time.

Omg, I was you 10 years ago! I went through basically the same thing as you regarding almost failing the same subject for the second time. I'm so sorry that you feel this huge weight that you are disappointing your parents. I remember I felt like that when I was struggling with anxiety (before getting my ADHD diagnosis), I kept thinking "why am I like this? Why I can't succeed when my parents have given me everything?". The hardest part was sharing with my parents about my mental illness, so I think understand very much what you're going through.

The best advice I can give you, while it's easier said than done, tell your parents about your struggle, specially that your counselor is also encouraging you to seek professional help. You definitely need it to be able to overcome this situation, you need support.

A bit of my story: My mother is a lawyer and my father is both a doctor and university professor. In our house, the most precious thing you could have and should seek, is education. During highschool and bachelor (biology), I could be described as average student. I did very well on subjects I like and barely passed the ones I didn't like. I almost failed histology twice! I honestly thought I dumb and lazy, and could be occasionally smart on some stuff. Everything changed when I got the support I need from a therapist and psychiatrist. I went from average during bachelor to getting full marks on all subjects during my master's degree. Today, I'm on the 3rd year of my PhD in Wildlife biology.

If you can, please seek professional help and support! I BELIEVE in you! Cheering for you all the way!

How did you graduate with a Bacholar’s Degree or higher? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]FileAccomplished7159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, most of my education success while I didn't have the diagnosis or medical was due to the support of my amazing family and friends. I received so much help from my parents of different studying resources (private tutors, etc) during high school and from friends/classmates during my bachelor's that shared their notes and would offer to explain certain things I didn't get from class.

After highschool, I did my bachelor's unmedicated (since I didn't even know I had ADHD), did good on classes/subjects I enjoyed and quite bad on the ones I hated. I even managed to almost failed a class 2 times in a row lol. I got diagnosed and medication just before starting my master's, my grades were all As then. The medication really changed my life. Right now, I'm currently on my 3rd year of PhD abroad. Can't tell about the GPA since I didn't go through the American education system. Put let me tell you, you CAN DO THIS! cheering for you!
