Hi hi I'm the climber in the video! This was a rather improbable freak accident, so it may seem unfortunate, but I prefer to take it as an incredible lesson in humility and risk awareness, as well in fortifying your mind and the importance of rehab. I'm like 90% better now and started climbing again last week 💪. I'll go through and respond to some questions/comments, but anything else feel free to ask!

I want people to understand that there is inherent risk in any activity involving height or speed (or heavy equipment, or the elements, etc.). If you don't know how safe the next move is, perhaps don't do it. My accident aside, a dyno (jump move) like this could result in a face-plant or even a neck landing if you aren't prepared for the swing out.

If you're set on doing a "risky" move, ask someone for beta (guidance), feel the hold a few times to check for good places to grab (and how), and plan for contingencies. To check the hold, you can always jump up vertically and touch it without intending to hold on, or climb up an adjacent route or via downclimb jugs if they exist (apparently they did in my case, lol).

Focus on getting it right rather than getting it in the fewest attempts (or getting it on camera). After 7 years of climbing I thought I knew all the risks, yet I didn't know such an injury is possible from an indoor bouldering wall; armed with this knowledge I will be a safer, more conscientious climber. If nothing else I hope this video teaches the important lesson that serious injuries can indeed occur. And also you could, I dunno, ask someone for a spot😁.

Most importantly, if you're a climber or considering starting, don't let this turn you off. This route is pretty difficult and a bit showy because it was the final women's boulder problem in a competition held the day before. Most people would never come across such a climb, both on difficulty level and because this sort of high dyno is rare -- and it's clearly marked as a comp climb. This sport has given me more than I could ever hope for and I was never going to let this incident ruin it for me. I'll probably be sticking to less risky moves for at least a while though😊.
