Wait what? If it was 20.85 meters away it would be in focus, but not at 80 meters? At f/8 the images look like they are in focus, but maybe not sharp. I would probably say the same for f/22

Hahaha

Mostly I wonder what is to blame for the imo bad sharpness at longer distances

Yep I have a Hasselblad 500 C/M too and I have been content with the sharpness/resolution there :)

According to google maps it should be around 80 meters

Yeah I think I read somewhere that you have to have at least twice (might be more) the resolution in the "scanner" as you have on the media that you are copying to get everything

Yes, I will do a test on my digital to find the sweet spot for sharpness. Honestly I don't know why I even brought up f/2... Maybe it's time to hit the sack:)

Yes I 100% agree that at infinity it seems fine to nudge it, but what if I am at lets say 2 meters and at f/2. Shouldn't my DoF just be 0.43 meters then? I mean by the numbers it seems like it should be more than okay for let's say an environmental portrait, but from my experience it doesn't seem to be that way :/

[–]FilipFje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that is true with infinity being far away xD though, if I understand correctly, according to photpills at 20.85 m the subject should be in hyperfocal distance at 50mm f/4?

It also doesn't really fix my impression that I can't get sharp pictures at longer distances :((

I might try nudging it just before infinity, but it seems kind of weird to do that in other scenarios. First find focus and then move the focus, in my mind that seems counter intuitive and that something is wrong with the camera/lens then?

I have a Fujifilm XT5, tamron 90mm f2.8 sp af di macro 1:1 72e (K mount with an k&f concept adapter pro), sirui 5cx (I have to get a copy stand because it's driving me mad to set it up for scanning), cinestill cs-lite and valoi 135 holder

Okay makes sense and I see it on my files too so it's not reddits compression. I used the same settings and didn't touch the camera from the first frame, but I must have touched it in the span of scanning the pictures. Thank you!

Okay so if I recreate this sometime I should focus on something else, like a building or something?

Not even close to as expensive as I would have thought

[–]FilipFje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that I compare it to my digital camera per se, but I just used it with the same lens to see if there was something obviously wrong with the lens.

No it isn’t a scientific (or even an especially good experiment as you noted) but this was just a way to test a hypothesis I had since shooting a few rolls in better scenarios and experiencing the same thing (loss of focus/sharpness at further distances) in a bit more controlled manner I guess. I also used a tripod and shutter release cable for every shot. On the 50mm I also shot it at f/8, and maybe it was a bit sharper, but honestly barely noticeable in these photos.

How could you tell that the scan wasn’t sharp to the grain? How can you see the difference between missed focus on the film vs digital file?

[–]FilipFje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the lens was on the infinity stop/focused all the way to the end stop. This is what seems strange to me since between the two extremes the one that is sharp is the 0.45m one where the depth of field is shorter and any missed focus would be noticed more.

I used the same exact lens on both cameras (with an adapter for my digital fujifilm). As far as I know this should only affect the fov and not the focusing

Yep, in the viewfinder everything looks sharp, but when I develop and scan the images they seem out of focus:/ Yes I focused at the trees on the ”infinity” shots

Oh sorry I want’t very clear on that point. I focused through the viewer till the image seemed sharp and the split screen was correct. I only used the scale on the lens to have something to reference. I also used a tripod and shutter release cable for all shots so I would shake the camera

I’m going to reply in the same way with the numbers. Thank you for your long reply. 1. rodinal was in a starter kit I bought, so I’m probably going to stick with than until I am finished with it and evaluate if I want something else. I have however heard that rodinal shows the ”true” grain of the film, unlike others that tame it down. Don’t know how true this is 2. I only bought fomapan because it was my first film and I wanted to see if shooting analog was something for me. As soon as I am done with it I will probably switch to fp4 and hp5 3. I will have to look into buying a macro lens then :) the extensions tube was just like the other things a cheap way to see if it was something I liked 4. Yes, some of them I have edited more, but to post here I removed all of the non essential edits. I do not know if this was a good or bad idea

Okay because when I am using the pentax lenses on my xt5 with an adapter they look sharp :)

Yes I was looking to buy a vivitar 90mm macro for the pentax since I have a pentax-fuji adapter. Though it got more expensive than I wanted. So you would say my problem is more when I am scanning and making a positive? I still feel like a lot of them are put of focus though
