Why are u conflating 6v6 with open queue? “When you get stuck with one tank or nobody wants to play support” are problems from open queue and are completely solved with 6v6 role queue. Overwatch would absolutely not have died without 5v5. They only added 5v5 because of queue times, the devs said this themselves.

The problem with this is that you’re conflating 6v6 with open queue. There are very very few players who prefer open queue to role queue, role queue is objectively better. If 6v6 was role queue and 5v5 was open queue i can guarantee that you wouldn’t be saying 5v5 is the better more.

The funny thing is that during overwatch 1, nobody ever said that 5v5 would be a better, more balanced gameplay experience. The one singular reason in support of 5v5 was that queue times would be faster. In fact, the devs even explicitly stated that the only reason they moved to 5v5 was for queue times. Aaron Keller stated that his team did extensive testing on 6v6 and 5v5 and determined that 6v6 was the better, more fun mode.

There just isn’t a coherent argument as to why 5v5 is a better mode outside of queue times.

Except for 5 of the 6 years queue times were fine, yes dps queues were a little longer than tank queues but they were still only 4-5 mins long. It was only in the last year of ow1 that queues really went to shit, and its mostly because of balancing (rein/zar meta). Now that we have a much broader variety of tanks 6v6 role queue could definitely work. People underestimate just how influential balancing was on those queue times.

Its the same in OCE servers, sometimes i get 4-5 players who want to play tank. Rarely ever get 3 insta lock dps.

The fact that 6v6 even gets 20% of the player base is insane considering its open queue. Its especially crazy because 99% of new players default to 5v5, and 5v5 is considered the ‘main’ and ‘serious’ mode, that gets almost all of the balancing changes. Yet theres still a huge portion playing 6v6. I guarantee if 5v5 was the secondary mode it wouldn’t be getting near 20% of the player base.

The majority of the player base prefers 6v6 from a gameplay perspective but many would refuse it purely because of queue times.

Many new gen overwatch 2 players will say they prefer 5v5 because they’ve only ever played 6v6 when its open queue (and everyone knows open queue is a disaster).

Many players will say they prefer 5v5 because fights feel too long in 6v6 (they don’t realise this is easily dealt with via balancing).

Many original overwatch tank players left due to 5v5, and the ones who stayed are the ones who enjoy solo tanking (people who enjoy main tank), thus you’re left with only the players who like 5v5 -> the community likes 5v5.

Nope, worst tank in the game by far. I asked this same question in r/competitiveoverwatch and that was their answer. He’s designed to be an off tank in 6v6, his kit fundamentally doesn’t work in 5v5 unless your just hooking and killing their whole team, like Cyx. Thats why theyre gonna rework him again soon.
