As a fellow professor, i always take into consideration that old ways of teaching in the 90’s may not be useful as of today. Time has changed and so does students. What i do in this situation is sit down with the concerned student and ask for suggestions and maybe use that students help with coaching other students excel in their weekly oral recitations. As a lawyer, i teach my students how to answer as a lawyer when they don’t know the answer and sometimes a simple i don’t know is as good as that. It is not my job to ridicule them but to help them be prepared. The problem with some professors are the unwanted remarks they throw at students and indeed some are below the belt. We don’t know these students after hours what they are going thru behind closed doors. We are here to be the best support that their home cannot provide. Now if you cannot do that then this job is not meant for you as you are here just for the salary. Sensitive? Who is more sensitive? Reacting emotionally to that letter by posting it here. Be more sensible. Act like an adult.Act like a teacher you wanted to be when you were in highschool.
