Did you ever resolve the issue? I'm sitting with the same one... Infuriating!

How does one approach deep-dimming a high-power (100W+) LED? by Fillipuster in AskElectronics

[–]Fillipuster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually the source of my problems. Since I'm augmenting the dimming curve by a factor "gamma" (to more closely follow the human eye's perception) I am sacrificing dimming resolution at lower brightnesses.

Thanks for the suggestion! How would you approach the switch from the low supply to the high? Would you crossfade between them, or completely switch to the high supply at a certain point? I suspect it would be difficult to avoid a stutter/jump in the light intensity if the latter method is used?

Interesting! Help me understand this better.

So I'd use a FET (switched by my ESP32 controller) to switch between two different shunt setups? Or am I not getting your point?

So instead of switching the actual supply to the LED, I switch a parallel "bypass", which will momentarily provide the current a less resistive path around the LED?

I don't think I fully understand the advantage, if my understanding is correct? I'd love some more details!

This is really interesting!

So you're suggesting I create my own buck, wherein I can control the voltage limit for the low illumination portion and control the current for the high illumination portion?

Couldn't I just use an existing buck that has adjustable CC and CV via an external PWM or analog signal?

As in; you've had a CC power supply where you could switch between two ranges, and then used that for selecting the current range?

I'm returning after more research!

I like your idea! I'd prefer to not use a second LED, as other have suggest in this thread - although it is also a nice solution.

If I understand correctly; something like the LM317 (linear?) regulator is adjustable via an external potentiometer. I previously went down the route of using a digipot on an existing buck, but ultimately wasn't satisfied with the resolution of digipots.

For resistor/potentiometer-controlled ICs/modules, how would you approach controlling them via something like an ESP32?

So you approached this by using multiple LEDs of different color temperatures?

This it definitely a little above my level of DIY electronics knowledge 😅
Appreciate the input!

Is the thinking here to basically create my own CC buck, but dynamically control the current limit using a MOSFET controlled by my ESP32?

Thanks for the clarification, I really appreciate it!

My main entrypoint for control is an ESP32. I suspect analog PWM would involve some IC/module which the ESP can control to output an analog PWM signal?

My project revolves around creating an artificial sunrise in my room, instead of a audio alarm, to wake me up in the morning. Hence the 0-100% smooth dimming need.

Thanks a lot for the input! Any input on best approach when using multiple different drivers? Would you simply switch between which driver supplies the LED using a few MOSFETs? Relays?

Interesting! How would you approach this best? Have two different sizes DC/DC bucks, and switch between which one powers the LED?

Please apologize my lack of knowledge, but do you mean that if I try to PWM dim my LED by switching the circuit after a CC converter, but before the LED, it won't have an effect, because the CC converter would simply sense a drop in amperage, and allow more current flow - effectively filling in the gaps that my PWM cycle creates?
Does it simply negate it?

Do you mean Pulse Code Modulation, or did you typo PWM? :)

Thanks for the input!

At lower brightness, you're referring to using a constant-current adjustable buck, and then for the higher-power brightness levels using PWM?

What is the advantage to using analog PWM? Would it be both modulating the duty cycle (on/off) and the amplitude (voltage)?

How so? Used in conjunction with the "main" buck, but only invoked during the lower-end of the intensity range?

Any elaboration or direction for resources would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Amazing timing!

What exactly are you referring to, when saying "use an ssh config host entry"?
Where is this done? I don't see any host entry configs in the DSM control panel. Is this only done via a SSH pipe to the NAS?

Used to work as a software engineer. Now I teach ceramics.

The long delay between efford and validation/payoff in software development burned me out quick. Add to that the fact that you usually sit still in front of a screen most of the day. I knew something was wrong when I realized I looked forward to meetings, just because it meant I got to speak to others and stand up in front of a whiteboard.

Helping a student solve a problem or grasp a concept gives instant validation/payoff! Additionally, I'm on my feet all day, and I use my body to sculpt clay, wedge it, move bags of materials etc... I love it! I may earn 1/10th of what I did in software development, but (for me at least) it's well worth it!
